On the “today view” of the iPad Home Screen (on the left hand side), it seems superfluous to show the time and date above the widgets (as the time / date is already shown in the status bar). Having the option to remove the time / date above the widgets would allow for more widgets to be displayed on the left hand side, and I feel it looks cleaner, especially if Apple aren’t going to allow us to place widgets anywhere on the iPad home screen.

What do others think? See screenshots for example comparisons. I’ve submitted feedback to Apple on it. Thanks

I was thinking the same. Also a gesture (two-finger swipe from the left, for example) to show them, while in an app, would be nice.

I thought you could do something similar but it requires two swipes: one down to get to the Notification Center and then one across to get to the Today Widget screen.

But like you said, it requires two steps: First swiping down and then swiping to the right. It's nothing super slow or complicated, but just one swipe would be even better.
