First of all, I know it’s developer beta 1. I’m aware it’s unfinished and I’m aware that there will, inevitably be bugs. I don’t need reminding.

I just wanted to point out that the Files app has some serious bugs at the moment. I’ve done several things which have caused it to hang (e.g. copying files by using the buttons.) but the most serious thing was data loss. I had a number of large files (4-12GB) on an externally connected ExFAT-formatted USB SSD. I was able to open and read them all just fine. After a few minutes, I received a connection error and afterwards, all the files were corrupted and only a megabyte or two in size. Morale of the story is that it’s probably not wise to use the files app with removable devices at the moment - at least for anything for which you don’t have a backup.

There are no issues with the drive and there was no physical disconnection

I’ve filed a bug report already and haven’t had a repeat issue since I formatted the drive as APFS.

Other than that it seems to be working quite well. A couple of issues connecting to SMB shares which hung the app but nothing major I’ve come across.
Isn’t ExFat notorious for data loss? That may be the equivalent of a techie “old wives tale” but I’ve always avoided that format after personally losing a ton of data at work (not my drive, just my problem to deal with) based on that assumption.

Baby steps Apple, you can't rush this. Waiting in anticipation for write access in 2035.
there are and always have been corruption issues with writing to NTFS. Even if you use a MAC, it doesn't include write access, it used to be considered that Microsoft didn't open source the spec so you had to license it from Microsoft. If you wanted to get write access to NTFS you had to add file system support from a third party vendor, even that was less than 100% stable. Basically, there is nothing great about NTFS, it is a good bridging technology because Windows can't read apple formats (what year is this?). So apple or Microsoft to blame? I guess Microsoft will support Apple drives in about 2075

Compared to FileBrowser Pro, Transmit 5 or Forklift, the Files app is still far behind although these new improvements will probably be welcomed by some here.

Filebrowser Pro looks interesting. Do other apps have access to its file store?

Looks like Transmit 5 for iOS stopped being developed 3 years ago. The developer said tehy simply did not make enough money to fund ongoing development.

in 94 we didnt had mobile OS, we had OS that everyone could poop on it; that secured was it

May I present: Newton
The other day I hooked my iPad to my MacBook, dragged a folder of TV show episodes to Files in the file sharing section of iPad-iTunes-Finder-whateveritis, opened VLC on the iPad, navigated to the Files section and to the show I wanted to watch, double tapped on the episode I wanted and started watching. Then I woke up. They have a long way to go.

That's pretty much how it works with Firecore's Infuse; I use iMazing instead of finder but Finder works as well. It also has a decent UI.

Perhaps what you meant to say is that untill iPadOS does what you feel it should do, then you will take it seriously.

In defense of the original poster, it is not just him, just read along this thread and see that the feeling is quite common.

And I believe Apple is to blame, they created the illusion that iPad is this powerful machine, better than a computer with the same chip they use on their desktops… and the reality is it is just a tablet. So until iPadOS brings “PRO” features and not just blown up version of their mobile system then it cannot be taken seriously.

(I own the M1 Pro, love it, use it to read, but NO, it cannot replace my computer).

I wish the Files app and a way to click to download an entire directory tree in the iCloud Drive to be downloaded to local storage.

That was there 2 or 3 years ago in a beta - at the same time they were rolling out iCloud Drive shared folders. Both were then removed due to the many bugs, but unlike iCloud Drive shared folders, the “Pinned folder” feature as it was called never returned.

but NO, it is not a computer replacement
I think that’s an opinion, not a fact.
But- has anyone said it is or that it should be? (Other than on sites like this?)

The ‘What’s a computer campaign’ doesn’t say it, the ‘your next computer’ campaign doesn’t say it. It all suggests however, that tablets are a viable form of computing, with power to match a traditional system.

For some people it means it can definitely replace a laptop. For others they can use alongside a traditional style computer. But for some people it means nothing and can never replace a ‘real’ computer with terminal and stuff.

The iPad was always put in the middle between an iPhone and a Mac. It’s got crazy powerful as tech does (look at phones for example!) but it was always aimed at people that didn’t want all the faff of macOS. People that wanted security of a phone os coupled with a bigger screen (and now) much more powerful internals. IPados exists to enable a better experience on the iPad, and with it will come more power naturally.

Just becuase it has the power to match and or better a traditional os based computer doesn’t mean it should morph in to one.

This is getting ridiculous. They're basically rebuilding MacOS step by step...just give us the real deal!!!

Despite the assertions of people who don't know what they're talking about, iOS is a more modern and powerful operating system than MacOS. So yes, they are "rebuilding" functions of desktop operating systems with the intention of modernizing user-facing systems. Porting MacOS to the iPad would be utterly backwards and regressive.

Why has NTFS support on MacOS been read-only for so many years? And now the version they bring to iPadOS is read-only too!

Is there just some licensing they don't want to pay for? Linux has had read-write NTFS support for years.

With it being developed by Microsoft more likely a licensing thing. Hopefully a third party app like on MacOS comes to iPadOS

This is outdated advice. Modern OS’ don’t need to eject drives. Windows eliminated the need a year or two ago now.

Yes and no. Yes, Windows 10 v1809 tries to flush frequently that the likelihood of dataloss is low. But it doesn't really eliminate it. If you remove a thumb drive while writing to it, there's nothing the OS can do. And you won't always know if some app in the background might be writing data.

We will have to agree to disagree. I think Apple can do far more they just choose not to.
Well if they went all out and did what they should do, we wouldn't have anything to look forward to with WWDC25 now would we?!

All this cross-compatibility, even if it's "ancient" tech, is great for those on the fence with jumping full on into the ecosystem (me). I really enjoy the Apple products I have, but I still maintain my "dated" PC because I do have quite a few files that I'd want to transfer over. While they would be fine on the Mac, if I truly wanted to use the ecosystem in it's magnificent splendor this is the update more in line with making that happen.

Good to know. I'll check 'em out. Thanks!
I've been playing with Outplayer which is able to keep/create file structures like

TV Show folder
--Season 1 folder
----Episode, episode...
--Season 2 folder
----Episode, episode...

It shows up in the file sharing section for dragging and dropping, Files doesn't even do that, but you can't open folders in the files sharing section, so you can't really see beyond the TV show folder. That's OK. VLC can't maintain that folder structure. It seems to be limited in the depth of folders. The only thing I don't like about Outplayer is the thumbnails for everything are long and skinny, instead of more television aspect ratio or movie poster shape. The further I can get from "TV" the better.

I rarely use my iPad these days, the wife and daughter are always on it.

I am curious what is still missing in the file manager?

I honestly think you're on to something and it would kind of make sense!

Except in the good old days, you could crank out a new OS in 3-4 years with a fully functioning file management system - and that was while inventing the underlying file system, graphical UI underpinnings, etc. The pace at which Apple is "innovating" with iPad OS and nearly unlimited funds is ridiculously slow.

So thats your excuse that they shouldn't do anything now? So we can look forward to WWDC25?

I hate to break it to you, people are trying to find justifications TODAY for spending up to $2800 on an iPad to watch youtube videos and browse the web. To quote Apple's newest ad campaign.... But who cares, No big deal, I want mooooooooore

I forget the target audience here, I should've used the '/s' tag for clarity. That little "?!" is indicative of sarcasm.

Dw, there will be a thousand people jumping out saying they don’t want macOS on iPad, citing “horrible experience” and “iPad is not meant for that” blah blah.
