Since no one else has mentioned it yet, right now this only works on Facetime but that's likely due to apps like Zoom, Teams etc not having access to the API that lets them switch video sources and will be addressed down the road when those apps are updated.

the insta 4k web cam on this will be interesting. audio output though needs to be fixed when an HDMI connector is put in. routes to the monitor speaker which is a pain

It would be nice if iPads could be used as monitors in general.
Yeah I've wanted this for a while. I read somewhere today that you can actually convert an HDMI signal to UVC with the right USB adapter and view that video source on the iPad. Someone's already made an app to just view the UVC audio / video so you're not limited to using the FaceTime app. (Join the Capture Pro: UVC Viewer beta - TestFlight - AppleApplehttps://testflight.apple.com › join)

(There's a reddit post about it but of course the iPad subreddit is doing the blackout protest... so I can't see what the dev said about it.)

I'm curious what the latency is like-- of course I want to use my iPad as a display to play Switch 😂

Very interesting, thanks for the heads up!

For the record, here is the cached version of the Reddit thread: https://webcache.googleusercontent....ilt_an_app_for_ipados_17_to_view_uvc_capture/

I guess I’ll check back in a few month to see how the situation has turned out.

It does. It just uses "Last In Wins."
See this and skip to 28:25. https://developer.apple.com/videos/play/wwdc2023/10106/
Just like I said. When you connect any audio device (i.e. docking station [with screen connected]), you are not able to switch to the iPad's internal speakers.

So no user audio output switching.

edit: also iOS/iPadOS is not able to play two audio sources at once. Which is pretty annoying when you are playing music and just want to play audio message or some random sound on the web page gets played. Your music/video stops playing and you have to manually start the playback again.
