5 years from an iPad is pretty good going!

Academia is an industry where money is thrown at them - a lot of tech waste. Law, there’s money in that. I’ve seen law firms all use iMacs for nothing other than they look good at reception and on the tables of their fancy millennial / eye Candy Ikea-haus offices
I think you misread- I agree 5 years for an iPad is great. I was saying that in my experience as a professor and my partner's as a lawyer in fields that should have high tech waste don't match the idea that an iPad should only last 3 years. Even from a fleet management perspective, getting a largely 55+ academic crowd to adjust to a new device that often would be painful.

There is no reason to update iPads really, the updates are incremental and the OS needs more functionality. Mine will last until 2027 at least. Maybe if they make a Apple Pencil v3 with an eraser on top that might get me to think about upgrading, but otherwise I have no need.

If you have an older iPad you can use it as a 2nd monitor while you travel or even hook up 2 of them up for 3 monitors on the go.

100% Agree regarding the iPad Pro 9.7. My only complaint is the Apple Keyboard (folio, I think.). I am on my second one, and this one hasn’t worked in over a year. I want to buy another one, but prices and limited availability have made it too difficult. But the iPad itself… still awesome. And I’ll use it as long as I possible can!

I have trouble with the Apple Smart Keyboard on my iPad Pro 9.7 inch also. I don't know if it's the keyboard itself or the connector on the iPad Pro, but I'm betting that it's the keyboard itself. Sometimes the keyboard works, sometimes it doesn't. It's unreliable enough such that I've decided not to use the keyboard any more. I'd be interested to buy a replacement keyboard too, but not for the prices that I'm seeing -- like $130! I'm willing to pay say $40 for a new one. Yes, I have seen prices for used ones that are way less than $130, but without being able to try it before I buy it, can I really trust that the old keyboard works?

Also, I'm ok with Apple not supporting this iPad on iPadOS 17. The latest version of the iPadOS 16 is workable but definitely has some laggy experiences. I just hope that iCloud syncing across the various applications (Photo, Book, etc.) will still work perfectly even though my iPad Pro 9.7 will be on v.16 while my other devices will be on v.17.

My 9.7-inch iPad Pro is on iOS 12. My iPad Air 5 is on iPadOS 15. I can confirm that iCloud syncing will work flawlessly. You won’t have any issues with that.

Awesome! Yeah, I primarily use my 9.7 as a reading device, though TBH, sometimes it's nice to just jot a few notes/thoughts to my journal (which is also synced across devices).

By the way, if you have an Apple Smart Keyboard for your 9.7, how is that currently working?

For that, it’ll work for many years, regardless of the iOS version it runs. Your notes will sync without issue, barring specific app issues. iOS in general won’t complain about the version discrepancy.

Sorry, I wish I could help, but I don’t have one.
