ipadOS 26.2 beta 3 brings back splitview along with the one drag gestures

IpadOS 26.2 beta 3 bring backs splitview and the one drag features to windowing mode in iPadOS 26.2 beta 3. These can only be accessed in windowed mode.

I’m not on the beta, but I’m so happy to see drag and drop multitasking making a return! I would love to see the old slide over stack return as well, with the swipe gesture to switch between.

Can you swap Split View windows from left to right and vice versa with a single drag or flick gesture or does it put the window on top of the other window? I know you can use the traffic light buttons for this, but I much prefer a single gesture than multiple taps.

P.S. I also miss the ability to swipe back in Safari (works in full screen only) In iPadOS 18 you could swipe back even in Split View, but of course now it resizes the window regardless of where you swipe.

yeah you can swap windows but only from left window to right window.

Thanks. That is with the traffic lights, but I was hoping it was possible to use single drag or flick gesture to switch sides. In iPadOS 18 and earlier you could do this, but I suspect this is not possible now.

This is a problem generally with Safari under the new windowing mode. In other apps they have implemented the API that allows the user to swipe back anywhere in the window, but Safari still relies on the edge-detection method.

I think in an ideal world, you’d want it to work in the same sort of way as to what the new snap feature does in macOS. However, this seems to be a start.

I love that first example! That’s exactly how it works on my iPad Air 5 running iPadOS 15, device from which I am typing. That’s how it should be! Then they can offer whatever windowing feature they like. But Split View should be accessible just like that.


Congrats to Apple for acknowledging that and for offering the possibility of choice.
