I’m so mad that they practically made a big range of things need one additional step than was previously needed. If I have a single open tab in Safari for example, I could previously close it by press "x" and return to my Safari home screen with all my bookmarks and so on. That was possible because the tab bar would be displayed even with just one tab open. That is no longer the case. Meaning I now have to click the two squares in the top right corner to get to the tab overview, and then I can close my tab. So one extra step.

This OS is so inefficient, it’s incredible. It’s plenty of small irrationalities like this one.
This isn't anything new in iOS 26 either. Here's video where the tab bar disappears when there's only one tab remaining...just like it does in iOS 26.

Btw, you can tap in the address bar to see your Safari home screen with all the bookmarks, iCloud Tabs, and suggestions without having to start a new blank tab.

I don't like single-view either but it's better than the windowing of iPadOS26.

Bring this back Apple - this was peak iPad multitasking.

I'm still on 18 and wondered what was special with that pic and how they could've messed up something so simple. Then I read up on the topic and became even more firm in my decision to wait for 27.

What you say is wrong. While it was the default setting to not show the tab bar, you could have it set to be displayed all the time, which means also when there’s just one tab open. That is how I had it set and it’s enabled me to close the tab with one click and come back to my Safari home screen. So now, it is one additional step, like many things in iPadOS 26.

Also, I do not want to go to bookmarks, iCloud tabs and so on, what I want is closing the current tab with one single click and having Safari ready for the next time I open it with nothing else open but the home screen.

Such a simple thing that worked, but Apple had to artificially made it more complicated. They do this constantly. I remember when I bought a new Mac mini and I had to buy a Pro Display because my previous Cinema Display wouldn’t fully be compatible anymore with the new Mac mini: generally speaking the picture was great and it was almost fully working, except for the brightness buttons on the official Apple magic keyboard. So you couldn’t adjust the brightness anymore. This was heavily criticised back then. Apples loves these little things through which they add cost. After all, they must sell new devices. They don’t know how to do anything else, so they must manipulate the market with tricks like these. So I ended up buying a Pro Display because of two nonworking buttons on a brand new Apple keyboard, and they absolutely love that at Apple.

My coworker has an iPad mini with an apple
Pencil pro and she uses procreate (I think) I’ve seen her work, clearly far from unusable.
Have you seen the video? That’s absolutely ridiculous. You use the Apple Pencil with Split View and it resizes the windows.

Split Screen usage with the Apple Pencil is one of the cornerstones of its usage patterns, how in the world can they break it like that?

If the new multitasking system does that to the Apple Pencil’s usage pattern, it should be scrapped entirely, imo.

I only have the Apple Pencil 2 which is only compatible with my Air 5 (M1) on iPadOS 15, and it works flawlessly here. That video is ridiculous.

Based on the original contention of the post, I disagree based on how I saw the iPad mini being used. While it might not be perfect for some it wasn’t an issue for my friend.

Apple Pencil doesn’t adjust windowing in iPadOS 26 whether it’s a floating window or in a split view. I even tried intentionally “grabbing’ the slider for split view with the Pencil. Didn’t move it… You’re correct that that video is ridiculous, because it doesn’t reflect reality… The person in the video is intentionally holding the pencil raised far away enough from the iPad’s display to not be using palm rejection, and using their pinky to intentionally adjust the window size. This is not an actual problem for regular use, it’s contrived. I create digital art on my iPad, I’m a freelance graphic designer/digital artist. I do this a lot. And never have I encountered the issue claimed by the video…

I just tried replicating this video, and I couldn’t. Even lifting the pencil way above the display, and intentionally trying to grab it with my pinky. This isn’t an actual problem… Here’s my video:

That’s great! In spite of all of the issues that iPadOS 26 has deprioritising touch-first input, at least that can be used in a way in which the issue is not prevalent. Maybe the person in the previous video is literally using it wrong, I wouldn’t know.

Like I said, my only Apple Pencil is only compatible with my iPad Air 5 (M1) and that’s on iPadOS 15, no issues with Split Screen and the Pencil there.

Here’s the next mess I unfortunately had to come across in iPadOS 26, and I was hoping someone may know a solution.

When I use iCloud Drive and click a PDF file, it will now open it in Preview. While I totally embrace Preview being introduced to iPadOS, I find it very annoying that you cannot easily go back from that open file to iCloud Drive. You would basically have to do something such as swiping up, closing the window, switching back to iCloud Drive, et cetera. Previously, you would simply pull down the PDF and that was it. That feature is still available when you press and hold a file in iCloud Drive, and then choose “overview” or something like that. But that takes significantly more time than the way it was before, especially if you have to search many files.

So basically, I’m stuck with multiple solutions that are all slower, less efficient, and need more effort than the way it’s been previously. It’s yet another take of iPadOS 26 making things less rational than they have been.

If it was the other way around (press and hold to have an option to open the file in Preview, and have the overview with a simple click) then that would have been a good solution for me.

Now it’s once more the worst of all worlds, and it makes you less productive and spend more time on redundant clicking and swiping - at no additional function. At scale, that’s a lot of energy, effort, and time lost.

Has someone figured out a way to change that? Or does Apple want us to continue paying for iCloud Drive+ while using less storage and bandwidth? I wouldn’t be surprised if that is Apple’s strategy. I mean, the profit has to come from somewhere, and profit always means that someone is paying for it - usually the client. 😂

There are quite a few options...
  • Tap "◀Files" that shows on left side of the menu bar.
  • Swipe right on the Home Bar to go back to Files.
  • Delete the Preview app.
  • In Files, long press the PDF > Open With > Preview with Quick Look.
    • This only needs to be done once and will set Quick Look to be the default viewer for PDFs, making it behave the same way as it did before.

Delete the preview app and it’ll act the way it used to

If you go to Files, hold press a PDF, select “Open With” from the context menu, and at the bottom of the selector is an option labeled “Open with Quick Look”. Then from then on PDFs will open in Quick Look by default as they did before. Same with any other file type, you can choose Quick Look as the default option in the same context menu. 👍🏻. I hope that helps you out. 🙂👍🏻.

iPadOS 26 is far from being a “mess” as claimed by OP. It’s got to be the biggest update ever for the iPad. And it’s awesome! The new Liquid Glass design is great! Enhanced multitasking system strikes the perfect balance IMO. It’s a great update, and far from the “mess” some seem to want to claim it is… 🤷🏼‍♂️

Mine are going to sleep fine. Have you checked Settings - Display & Brightness - Auto-Lock and see if it’s set to “Never”?
I double checked and they’re both set for 2 minutes. All I saw was a Reddit post reporting it as in issue with the betas and a couple people confirmed they had the same problem.

I’ve never had any issues like that, and I’m on the developer betas. App Library looks perfectly fine for me. 🤷🏼‍♂️. Are those designs on the wallpaper under it? Have you tried changing wallpapers?
No it’s a bug. The screen behind it was safari. It only happens when using clear or tinted icons.and it corrects itself AFTER you go into a folder then back out it looks normal again

Sorry to hear you’re encountering that bug. Have you tried a clean install? Hopefully it’s resolved for you soon. 🙂👍🏻
