Hello my friends!

I ve iPad Air 5 with the latest iPadOS 15.5 and I’m trying to close apps from external (BT) keyboard with cmd+tab and cmd+Q but apps are still remaining open when I swap up and see the multitask.

Are there a way to close open apps finally from keyboard without needing to swap up in screen ??

thank you for your help =)

you can try to use mouse to mimic actions of closing app but it is very bad. I’m not aware of CMD+Q that can close apps On iPadOS.

There’s no reason to do this if the app is not misbehaving. If it’s not on screen it’s not active. There is no keyboard way to do this unless you have a trackpad keyboard such as a Magic Keyboard. Otherwise swiping up is the only way but again its not necessary unless you’re having a problem with the app, it’s not recommended otherwise. Just because you see it when you trigger the app switcher by swiping up or using the globe key on the keyboard doesn’t mean it’s “open”. It’s just there as a convenience if you want to quickly go back to a recently used app.

I also understand you aren't supposed to close apps but some of us from days a long time ago just want to close apps we aren't using often - I keep mail., Safari, and maybe a couple more open but ones I use once a week I don't. I know not recommended but ...

It’s not that it’s not recommended, it’s that it’s completely unnecessary, unless the app is not functioning properly. All you’re doing is making the app completely reset itself, regain your location and any pertinent data for its operation. Essentially bogging down your phone and using extra battery charge. None of that is harmful just unnecessary. The app isn’t open, iOS keeps it in a suspended state ready to go if and when you reuse it - it’s completely inactive. Anyone can use their device however they wish but why do something that has no benefit unless you’re having a problem with a particular app. For me I restart all my devices once a week, not necessary but not harmful and it does clear up occasional glitches. Less tedious than force quitting every app, that does nothing.

Command-H returns you to the Home Screen. Some other universal keyboard shortcuts are shown here.
I thought globe + h replaced the cmd + h keyboard shortcut in iPadOS 15? I haven’t updated yet and I am so use to using the cmd + h shortcut and hope that option is still available despite the addition of the new shortcut?

On a slightly related note to the OP - is it possible to close a split view window using the multitasking menu (...) in iPadOS? I believe it is possible in iPadOS 16 based on screenshots I have seen?

I.e. you have two Safari windows open in split view and you want to close one (not simply ‘minimise’ it).

Thanks!

Minimize first, then simply swipe up on the side you want to close.

Do you mean go to app switcher and then swipe the left or right split view window to close?

If you have a keyboard with your iPad, can you please let me know whether the old CMD + H shortcut works for going to homescreen or whether it only works with Globe + H since iPadOS 15 onwards?

Thanks!

CMD-H does indeed work to return to the iPad home screen.

Tip: If you hold the cmd key down, a sub-screen will appear showing all the available shortcuts for whatever app you are in (they differ per app).

UPDATE: Cmd-W now quits apps in iPadOS 16. Also works in app switcher with Cmd-TAB.

If an app has multiple tabs, it closes the tabs. Then closing the final tab quits the app itself.

It does close the app, returning to the Home Screen. I thought it was only returning you to the Home Screen but it is completely closing the app. Good observation!! Nice to know this is possible now.
