I haven't seen this reported anywhere but I'm assuming the import process from an SD card into Photos is unchanged with the exception that you need to go into Photos and initiate the import? In iOS12, if you connect an SD card, Photos would automatically launch and open the import tab. With the new Files integration, I'm guessing this doesn't happed but can still be invoked if you go into the Photos app?

I played with this for a bit today and it seems that photos does NOT auto launch when you connect an sd card or camera. The import icon will still show up, but only after you manually open photos up. Otherwise, the OS does nothing automatically, which I find very relieving. I almost can’t believe external storage is here on iPad. I’ve been reading for years about how it will never come, but here it is.

Thanks for confirming - this is what I suspected but wanted to be sure. I like the Photos import process since it is easy for selective imports and it also records what has been imported to date from the card. Now we have the best of both worlds!

I can’t wait to be able to import raw photos from an SD card directly into the Lightroom app, bypassing Photos altogether and avoiding the dance I currently have to do. Really happy for this feature!

iPad OS seems to have broken this completely for me. The import tab shows up but no pictures/media are detected on the add SD card. Also having trouble copying files via the Files app.
ATM iOS 13 is a step back for me.

All that’s missing is for Adobe to support conversion to DNG for Lightroom CC. Perhaps it should happen in the cloud, but for me that’s essential, as I shoot uncompressed Sony RAW files (their compressed RAWs are lossy) and save a lot of space comparing to losslessly compressed DNGs.

hi the only thing i don’t like is, you can not view the raw file, it’s only showing a low quality preview in the File app.
some workaround? it’s really annoying the current way to view the raw files in the ipados, better was whit ios 12 ( photo app )

Hope someone can help with this.... I don’t see a way to import into photos. I connect a USB that contains pictures, but photos doesn’t auto load and I see no option to import.

If I want to transfer from the USB into files, where should I transfer the photos? The pictures are all contained in folders one the USB - could that be why?

Thanks!

you need to open File app in order to see your usb device, there you see your files.

After updating to the latest beta, the problem seems to be with ExFAT formatted SD cards. They are mounted as read-only and none of the photos can be imported, even copying through the Photos app creates problems. Will continue to test!

My Sony 32Gb cards are fine, 64Gb shows that there are no photos to import. Guess they’ll fix this in later betas.

I was coming here to write the same thing. The issue seems to be with ExFAT file systems, specifically SD cards—I don't know if any of my HDD/SSDs are formatted ExFAT to test.

I am running iPadOS 13 and it would not let me import any photos from my 128gb SD card. I took a new SD card, same size, same brand, put it in my camera, formatted it with my camera, took a few pictures, and they imported fine.
