Seeing as the iPadOS is officially released this autumn does it not make sense that new iPad pro's will be released at the same time?

There is no reason to connect iPads with iOS release dates.

Normally new iPads will be in a separate October event.

That’s incorrect. Usually they are released in the spring event. We rarely have October events, they DO NOT happen on a yearly basis. The only reason why we had one last year was because nearly the entire product line was updated. We won’t see an October event this year.

iOS (which includes iPadOS) updates are timed with iPhone updates and have never been timed with iPad updates. I can’t even think of a time that iPhone and iPads were released at the same time. Often new iPads come out a month later (in October) but not always.

Original iPad Pro and iPad Mini 4 were launched alongside the iPhone 6s.

iPad launches have never been as consistent or predictable as iPhones. They’ve launched in September, October, November, March...

Heh. Well, the OP did specify iPad Pro. Technically there were two fall announcements for the pro line. Fall iPad announcements:

iPad 4, iPad Mini: October 2012

iPad Air, iPad Mini w. Retina: October 2013

iPad Air 2, iPad Mini 3: October 2014

iPad Pro 12.9”, iPad mini 4: September 2015

iPad Pro 3rd gen: October 2018.

So, pretty much anything is possible and Apple might update any iPad anytime they please. Aside from a possible iPad Pro update, there’s also evidence to suggest another non-pro flavor of iPad might be released this fall.

Everything points to an iPad Pro launch this fall. The most recent supporting evidence comes from Mark Gurman.

The real question is, will it be September 2019 or October/November 2019?

Typically, Apple separates the launch for iPad to focus media exposure on iPhone and Watch. I would expect the same this year. The iPad Pro is content creation device and should be launched with the new 16-inch MacBook Pro.

What about the 10.2" replacement to the non-pro iPad that many people have been talking about? That's the one I'm really interested in, and I hope to see it sooner rather than later.

Gurman says both the 10.2" and iPad Pro are 2019 products. It makes sense to launch new hardware along with iPadOS.

Which would mean this month, right?

Many people say that they won’t want iPads overshadowing the new iPhones though, and I could see them wanting to launch them closer to the holidays.

Fall runs from September through December, so we still have a few months to go.

I think the marketing angle is a big one. Launching three new iPhones and two new Watches deserves its own event. It would also be difficult to position A13 and A13X as both being the fastest. If Apple spends stage time talking about A13 in iPhone 11, followed by a graph showing A13X as being 2X faster in certain workloads, it's weird.

I think we will see iPhone's and Apple Watch at the September event (possibly new Airpods or the rumoured over the ear headphones). October will be the launch of the iPad Pro and the new 16" MacBook Pro.

I just don't see Apple announcing the iPad Pro and 16" MacBook Pro alongside the new iPhone's and Apple Watch. The iPhone announcements usually take up a lot of time at the September events (last year it was a little more than half of the event time).

September - Apple Watch update with new casings Ceramic and Titanium, 3 iPhones (XR, iPhone Pro and iPhone Pro Max). Possibly new Airpods and or over the ear headphones.

October - iPad Pro and 16" MacBook Pro.

I think this is pretty much spot on.

Rumours are saying we will and my point was we never get iPads during an iphone event....

There was only a single iPad Pro released in spring: 2016 iPad Pro 9.7. That's probably only because it wasn't ready by Fall 2015.

iPad Pro 12.9: Fall 2015
iPad Pro 9.7: Spring 2016
iPad Pro 12.9 & 10.5: Summer 2017
iPad Pro 12.9 & 11: Fall 2018

Rest of the iPad line-up:
iPad: Spring 2010
iPad 2: Spring 2011
iPad 3: Spring 2012
iPad 4 & mini: Fall 2012
iPad Air & mini 2: Fall 2013
iPad Air 2 & mini 3: Fall 2014
iPad mini 4: Fall 2015
iPad 5: Spring 2017 (~1.5 yr old CPU)
iPad 6: Spring 2018 (~1.5 yr old CPU)
iPad Air 3 & mini 5: Spring 2019

This year we have reason to believe a break from even steady patterns in line with Apple's new 'let's stop neglecting non-spotlight products' approach lately. With the non Pro mid range iPad being refreshed, the Mini, the Mac Mini, Mac Pro etc - all neglected for years under Cook but now, thankfully all being revived. Perhaps that's why the Mini / Air 3 were focussed on back in March, to clear the stage for new Pro and budget iPads in October.

Don't forget.. the budget 2018 iPad got an entire event of it's own last March! And that's a non-spotlight product like the Pro. It really is hard to say.
