The 4th Gen Retina 32GB I have now has no memory left and is slow and feels cumbersome.

Don't confuse storage with RAM - way too much hoopla being made over the lack of 4GB in the 9.7" iPP. Surfing in bed would only require 256MB of RAM.

Completely understood and not confused. I am thinking 3 years down the road and if the RAM will be applicable in terms of performance and speed.

Okay. So, are you shilling your blog then? That's usually poor form... post your thoughts directly in the thread you are already participating in. Not some freaking blog we have to go to. That is what forums are for... to discuss things.

You cannot definitely prove that lack of memory is the issue with your Air 1 getting slower over the years, when that tends to fall down to iOS demanding higher system requirements with each update / feature add. The rest of your argument is hand-waving towards the future without provide a lot of substance.

I get that 1GB vs 2GB was a legitimate upgrade when it came to certain use cases, Safari tab reloading being the most prominent factor. I noticed a difference when I went from an Air to an Air 2.

4GB is great! Just not necessary for most users.

But that is okay, let's just have fifty more damn threads on this issue.

Ok, point taken on the blog link, and apologies - not the intention.

As for 'hand-waving', that's exactly what I'm doing (hence the reference to my 'simple mind' :)). I may be utterly wrong, as is often the case, but it's just a hunch that investing in the higher-powered machine was the right thing to do at this stage.

I also think that the fact there are a lot of threads on this issue is quite a useful data point; it is clearly a topic worthy of discussion.

On the whole bed/couch question...In bed, I don't notice much of a change coming from my iPad 2, other than the bigger screen of course. It just needs to be propped up on a pillow or whatever. The couch is where I notice a big difference, I really like the larger screen resting on my lap. The larger size is more comfortable and viewing size and distance matches well.
Jury is still out for me though, but I'm leaning toward keeping the 12.9"

Side note: The one negative comment I will make is that this could really benefit from a stand, a la the Surface. I know that isn't feasible, but I really want to prop this thing up with something other than my hand or pillow. Also, this thing screams out for a pro-ified iOS.

The fact that there is not a pro-ified iOS is also a WAH point for me! As much a I want the new iPad I don't want to pay Macbook prices for a giant iPhone!

Yeah, you can't go wrong with buying the higher-powered of the two :D. I'm curious if next year will see the 9.7" iPP get 4G of RAM or not.

Sorry for the snarky post from this morning, the coffee hadn't kicked in yet.

How are the big iPads for general nighttime use - laying in bed reading?

I read with it in bed all the time. I just raise my legs and prop it up on there. If you don't like that position, you may have problems, though.

If you don't like giant iPhones, just get a MacBook.

Yes, I saw the weight spec and figured as much. Not so much concerned with the weight due to the size increase. I know I missed the BB and Staples sale as my indecision on whether to buy took over!

I would also use it for business travel - I could potentially remote into my work PC or use my Office 365 account for productivity purposes. I have been too chicken to try this so far though.

If you do Remote Desktop/laptop, or possible beneficent of working on split screen, you may feel 9.7" is too small to work on.
I sometimes use my 12.9" as a monitor of my MacBook Pro when I want to use Photoshop or other non iOS Gracie/music softwares(connect iPad to laptop by Astropad).
