In Canada, travellers have never had to remove their iPads from their bags when going through airport security. However, this past week, I was asked if I had an iPad, specifically if I had an iPad with a Smart Keyboard - so, if NO keyboard you can just leave it in your bag - if it's with a keyboard, you have to remove it from your bag.

Technically in the US you shouldn't have to remove it but the TSA agents have no idea what the rules actually say so will make them up on the fly. You can leave it in the bag but it may well get flagged and take you more time than if you'd just pulled it out.

Been on several trips in past few months, ipad pro always stayed in my carry-on bag and never flagged....

Like Zhenya said, TSA are all over the place with this, even in the same airport. Sometimes they tell me to leave it in, sometimes they it say it should come out. Security Theatre - it's either a risk or it's not.
