And what tangible, real-world benefits will this bring to Android?
3.8 finally brings native support to Android from the kernel. This finally means development time will drop significantly for the Android version of the kernel and allow for better optimization, to include;

1. Support for open source NVIDIA Tegra and Samsung Exynos*DRM drivers
2. support for the*Flash-Friendly File-System
3. A lower memory footprint; in some cases much lower.

The commonality between the Android and Linux kernel diverged a while ago, and only now are converging again. We are about to see some significant improvements within Android as a result.

4.2 already(mostly) screams on my Nexus 4. If that's true I can't wait for even more speed!!!

I'm not sure why this would be the case. It's notoriously hard and time consuming to get new features into the mainline kernel. With Google's fork they were able to include whatever they want, when ever they want.

With regards to those features you mention, there's absolutely no reason why Google couldn't have integrated them into their own fork if they needed to use them.

Integrating Android code back into Linux does more for Linux than it does for Android and was mainly a political move to dispel all the criticism that Google was massively under contributing to Linux whilst at the same time seeing great benefits derived from it. The integration of this code now makes Google one of the largest code contributors.

There are enough specific details in the post to justify my opinion. Just because you may not agree with, or like, my interpretation of that information doesn't give you the right to call it vague or worthless.

How about providing a rebuttal prediction full of specifics, as a counter, instead of posting up a "worthless" comment that adds nothing to the topic or conversation?

Because it's my responsibility to prove your assertion wrong.

Riiiiiighttt.

While having a Galaxy S4 and loving it, I'm sticking with an iPad until Amazon releases Amazon Instant Video to Android, like they did for iPads. We are Prime members and watch movies a lot. So narrow sighted of them :(

I don't see them making an app simply because the Android system is so open and would leave holes to have their content pirated.

Even my local news channel has an app on iOS that allows me to watch their live newscast. On the Android app, you can't watch the newscast. I had to instal flash to watch it live on their website.

I've never coded for Linux, much less the kernel for it, so I'm commenting from the recently opened public kernel repository by Google. It is labeled as "experimental" for the 3.8 kernel. Specific details in the link below regarding 3.8;

Never said to "prove me wrong". Why not provide a worthwhile comment, adding to the thread, instead of posts like your last two? If you choose to simply bash people's opinions based of their interpretation of data, that's fine. I will simply ignore your posts and label it as troll bait. I would rather not do that though. How about giving me a counter point post instead?

So, your answer to my asking you for more information to back up your assertion is to ask me to offer more information on a claim I haven't made?

Not my job, sir. Offer your own support, if you truly are writings things that you believe.

Does this thread really need to exist? I don't see it ending well.

iPads are superior to Android tablets simply because developers actually create tablet apps for iOS. Most apps you download on an Android tablet will simply be a scaled app created for phones. Thank god for native scaling...

for apps? sure

but for other things like storing films, tv shows via an SD card? android is better in that area Alot better infact. You don't need to worry about downloading films and shows on android tablets like you have to worry about space on the ipad.

This thread is under the base assumption that iPads are better than Android tablets at everything. And since they aren't, the premise is killed.

These are different tools for different needs. One tool isn't better than another at everything, unless it's the sonic screwdriver.

The apps are built in actually but invisible and there is no way that I know of to activate them.

Download the xposed framework and then download modaco's toolbox. it has a setting that disables the region check on boot for google services.

This hopefully means that android on x86 will see much better support as well and be able to be installed like a linux distro on a pc. Especially now that many windows machines are coming with touchscreens.

Since apple more or less started the tablet market, I think we haven't really seen a lot of good competition yet. The iPad is awesome, I agree, and I think it's the best tablet out there right now in every way. I do own an N7 and I have been tempted to check out W8 tablets but I can't wait to see the next iPad and more than likely buy one. I had an iPad 2 for a long time and I recently sold it so right now I'm without one.

I think Apple kind of lost their ground a little with the iPhone, and I had no problems trying out other phones. But when it comes to computers I can't see ever going back to Windows, and when it comes to tablets, I think it will take a pretty major product to topple the iPad.

iPad only just got Google Maps this week. Stop saying iOS has tablet apps.

So you,

Take 1 minute example ...

Try to make minute example indicative as a whole.....

End result = look silly

Whether you like it or not there is undeniably truth that Android tablets have suffered due to lack of 'tablet' optimisation of apps. Google themselves are acknowledging this and was part of focus on Google I/O with new Api's in 4.3 & KLP to aid developers to target tablets better. If google can see this is an issue, why be so blasé .... To quote Microsoft.. #dealwithit ;)

Things should improve going forward, but at this specific point. Yes android tablets lack tablet specific versions especially in comparison to iOS.

Latest rumors point to a refresh iPad Mini (no retina) and then a Retina version coming early next year.

If true, that sucks. Too long.

There's also rumors that the Retina iPad Mini will be sold alongside the regular iPad Mini, which would mean the Retina iPad Mini would likely be more expensive. Gotta love Apple premiums.

Again, if all true.

If the iPad Mini Retina version was coming this year and sooner, it'd make my decision between it and the new Nexus 7 a lot harder.

Although I hate Apple and iOS, truth be told, iPad has no competitors at the moment due to the excellent app selection.
