This! Sometimes I’m near my iPad and my iPhone is plugged in and charging away from me, my alarm goes off. It’d be nice if they could somehow iCloud sync that stuff. And Notifications! How am I still seeing old notifications on one device long after clearing them on another?
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Ha. I'm still waiting for the Notification sync that was supposed to come with iOS 7. Maybe it'll finally arrive in 2023...10 years late.

I have resorted to setting most notifications to not go to the Notification Center or Lock Screen on my iPad for this very reason. But then when I unlock my iPad I get bombarded with days worth of stale notifications coming through one at a time at the top of the screen. Still better than having to constantly go into an extra device and clean up notifications every time I use it.

Same thing with the Apple Watch. Whenever you get a notification when the iPhone is locked, it shows up on the phone and watch and you can clear it once from either device. But if you happen to get a notification while your iPhone is unlocked, it doesn't show up on the watch and you have to know to check the phone separately to make sure you've seen all of your notifications. It's just haphazard and inconsistent.

And don't get me started on Messages in iCloud. Works everywhere but Apple Watch. Every time I get a spam text, I delete from my phone or iPad, then have to go to my watch and delete it a second time.

If there were one feature, one request I could ask for above everything else -- it wouldn't be more Lock Screen customizations or a half-hearted effort to put widgets on the iPad Lock Screen. I used the default wallpaper on my iPhone since 2014. I don't care what font the time is in. Just give me full notification and message sync between iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch. That's really all I want out of iOS that doesn't exist today.

That’s good except for us who have older iPads that got iOS 16 but can not get 17. This has really sent me over the edge with Apple’s laziness on half updates only to make user buy no devices.
Apple has always been pretty good making updates available for older units. But that can only go so far.

With all the calculator apps out there (most of them free) do we really need an Apple version?
You could say the same thing about weather apps but I'm glad that they finally added the modern weather app that iOS already had last year.

How the fix the Clock widget that defaults to Cupertino time.
We, who don’t live in USA are discriminated by being pushed to have a default time from a city which basically nobody outside USA knows is a city. Sure, if you are expert you can change the city, but why it MUST be the default when I live in a different rime zone?.
Apple is quite discriminatory to other cultures. Zero respect, just “watch faces to show we support sexual diversity”, but trullo, no respect to acknowledge that there are other countries and time zones!

I’m sure Apple will make sure to only allow three small Lock Screen Widgets just below the Time. They’re going to find another way to disappoint everyone. And they’ll do it easily and drag it on for years.

What truly amazes me is that Apple’s had these really powerful iPads for years, but they always seem to put more effort into iOS. Poor macOS just gets more broken, while the iPad continues to sit in the middle. When will Apple learn to walk & chew gum at the same time?
I'm gonna wager a guess and say that the most development goes into what brings in the most revenue.

Revenue Streams2022
iPhone$205.5B
Mac$40.18B
iPad$29.3B
Wearables, Home, and Accessories$41.24B
Services$78.13B

That should give you some insight.

I'd be surprised if all the lock-screen features came over as some of them require ML cores. Heck, even some of them aren't supported on my iPhone X with the first gen ML cores (depth effects). I wouldn't be surprised if widgets and fonts came across, but items that need the ML cores may be limited to A12+ iPads.
That's a given, although isn't it just the lock screen depth effect (where the clock is tucked behind something in your photo) that requires the "neural engine" of the A12 or newer (and therefore the 8 and X can't do it)? If that is all that ends up missing, it isn't that big of loss for people with A9 & A10 based iPads.

We were disappointed by lacklustre iPadOS 16 new features.

We will be disappointed by lacklustre iPadOS 17 new features.
We will be disappointed by lacklustre iPadOS 18 new features.
We will be disappointed by lacklustre iPadOS 19 new features.
We will be disappointed by lacklustre iPadOS 20 new features.
We will be disappointed by lacklustre iPadOS ... new features.
Rinse. Repeat.

With a lot of luck, by 2030 we might be able to properly manage files on an iPad Pro M10 Ultra Extreme Pro (it's probably what's required to achieve such a feat). It will only be available for the 12.9" iPad Pro model though...

But it's all good in the best of the world since we can customise the Lock Screen (yeah - that thing that disappears after a sec once said iPad has recognised your face/thumb)
And we still won’t be able to update the firmware or use the camera in the ASD.

I'm glad they added weather too. But I wouldn't be upset if they hadn't. I'm still amazed that they give away Pages, Numbers and Keynote for free. That saved me a couple hundred dollars.

Or you could just ask Siri or Google, what are they calculating? Are they doing Integration or Functions?

"Yeah, I need my iPhone to do f(x)"
Years ago I paid $8 for PCalc and never looked back. But for basic math calcs I use Siri.

Horrible in its accuracy. After getting burned on the ridiculously expensive (for its utility) series of M1 iPads Pro when they first dropped I will hesitate severely before thinking of ever picking up another Apple tablet. The 64GB 9th-generation iPad that I had in the interim between then and my excellent-for-the-price base M1 MacBook Air (which I copped from Best Buy for less than $700 on discount + with iPad trade in) was a far better value and basically just as useful for my needs. No quad speakers or ProMotion, but who really cares when the savings is so great.

In any case I will be sticking with my M1 Air and the rest of my Apple kit until something truly compelling for the money comes along.

A year too late. I wonder why this wasn’t introduced last year.
For better or worse, teams can commit to having a iOS-targeted line of functionality and put more features in, rather than having to launch on iOS and iPadOS at the same time with less time to put in features.

These are also usually made to integrate with the release of _new_ hardware features, such as the always-on display.

So the exact answer is likely, because we got astronomy and weather backgrounds, or because we got multiple fonts, or photos displayed while the screen is powered down - something to that effect.

FINNNNNAALLLLYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY

We would have gotten this last year, but they wasted talent and time on Stage Manager, which at this point is probably on the "Ignore, Deprecate, Disappear" list.

Two separate teams most likely. Telling Stage Manager people to drop what they were doing and help the Lock Screen team would have only slowed things down (e.g. mythical man month)
