Or they could sell a upgrade. Much like they do with iWork every year. I would pay $$ to upgrade my current iPhone so it can behave like a PDA.

i talked with a woman at cingular (at&t) and she told me she has heard rumors that you will be able to purchase updates to keep your iphone current with the new one coming out. but not sure how much she really knows but it was intersting to know

yep. you can buy a 3g upgrade, you plug it into the iphone and you magically have 3g
no. i doubt at&t general workers know much about future iphones
the new one is 3g (apple said this when they released the original iphone) which requires different hardware

Easy. She knows nothing. Sorry, but the random info from an att/cingular employee is somewhat memeish at this point. Apple has NEVER indicated that it would "sell" iPhone updates. If it is anything like Mac OS, we might hit one of those points at 1.5 or 2.0, but I think we're at least a year off from that.

i think she meant more or less software type updates. i dont know for sure though i cant speak for her. it was just something i heard. i am not an idiot i no there is no plug/ update for 3g but i have heard the new phone will have other features on it as well........maybe that is what she was talking about. i dont know

It's just not worth repeating when its "something I heard from a cingular employee". Again, this comment has been repeated ad nauseum to add credibility to almost any random theory. It's NEVER useful to anyone. No offense, but it's worth noting. There were numerous threads during the launch of the iPhone that sent speculation in a ton of different directions. It doesn't help that you just joined the forum this month as well. It's usually how it goes.

In fact... your second post after joining the forum is apparently one of these "someone told me" posts. Meh.

im just saying what cleverboy is saying, that the staff know next to nothing
carphone warehouse sales people in the UK for example, say that if the iphone is not activated on o2 within a week of purchasing, it will never work. now, we all know how that turned out didnt we :)

SMS to multiple people. I was a bit mystified that I could not do that. Hope that it's fixed.

Yeah the first time I went to do that and couldn't I was like "What?". Honestly though I don't really need it, but it could be nice. I'm just excited for an update, and the new google gps thing.

^ Updates with some useful new tools (as opposed to those essential, but boring, security fixes and what not) are always good.

I actually have a somewhat legitimate need for multiple SMS: coordinating band practice. Obviously my silly band can function just fine I have to *gasp* send more than one instant message, but it does make things easier, and my old Windows Treo could do that just fine.

One of my other band-mates also has an iPhone, so we're both without that helpful feature.

I really did mean "no offense". You'll have to excuse me but there are folks that sign-up to the forum just to try to stir up confusion and rumors. If that's not you, then definitely take my "Meh" with a grain of salt. :)

Well, if you're still auditioning voices and tones to attach when you read my posts, I'd prefer it wasn't "Lurch", "Gilbert Godfrey" or "Joe Pesci". In return, I promise you've not been assigned "Homer Simpson", "Fran Drescher" or "Peter Griffin". ;) Have fun tonight.

i heard that i'm gonna have to buy ichat from itunes when it comes out.

serious?

i'd kill myself...

Why would you kill yourself? It wouldn't be THAT expensive if that's what youre thinking. And they'll have the iChat application for the iPhone ALL over the internet for free.

I would listen to the woman at AT&T - They get to know things ahead of time, and even know things that WERE going to happen but DIDNT.
