I'd tell my wife to take her earrings off before answering the phone in future.

I was being arrogantly serious as am 100% sure this is the cause. 👍
I'd say if you get Apple to warranty the display you should install a screen protector immediately. If they do replace it it would be a "goodwill gesture" and next time they'll tell you to pound sand.
Where did you find that Apple used the term "most durable ever".
All I can find is: The "toughest glass in any smartphone". That means (IMHO) hard to break/shatter resistant. Not sure if you could extend that to include "scratch-proof", or even "scratch-resistant"
You can't have both unfortunately due to the science behind different grades of glass. Sapphire glass is extremely hard to scratch but is extremely brittle. It comes down to which would you rather have, a screen which is almost scratch proof but shatters easily when dropped or a screen that is really hard to break but scratches easily. I guess everyone has their own preferenceToughest glass to me seems like something which should sustain scratches as well.
Yes, you might think that...Toughest glass to me seems like something which should sustain scratches as well.

The thing is though, Apple never guarantees that the glass is entirely scratch resistant. If they did guarantee something like that, then you would have a valid argument, but there’s too many vulnerabilities with personal objects that can damage the display/coating. In your case, you’re claiming your wife wasn’t wearing earrings, so what do you suspect that possibly could have caused that damage to begin with? And don’t take this the wrong way, but my guess is probably some type of negligence of how the phone was handled that caused the damage initially.
The reason I say ‘negligence’, too many times it’s easy to want to blame the manufacturer for defects with hardware, but in the reality is, your frustration doesn’t also take an account that the phone somehow received damaged by the user (Meaning your wife), rather be an accident/negligence, doesn’t matter. It happened on your own doing. It’s common where threads are created so you can vent and perhaps receive some feedback, but when damage is caused to a Phone display, it has Show somehow initially, we can’t blame the manufacture for ‘durability‘ (especially when there’s not any type of mass outcry for faulty displays), not when you don’t have a clear explanation of how the damage occurred in the first place.
Apple boasted that this glass is most durable of all, yet my year old XS which fell 2 times on concrete (one times on display) wihthout ANY glass protector or case protector only has tiny hairlike scratches. On the other side, this 3 month old device which has been properly taken care of has chips, scratches, dents (whatever you wanna call it) on the surface and it is not normal.

I saw display damaged from keys. But this is not from keys. She always carries it stored either in pocket without anything else in it or if she puts it into bag or purse it is always in some kind of pocket or enclosure alone. Most of the day it just sits on the shelf in our living room.
Maybe in future try to be less arrogant. My wife doesn't wear earrings.
