For the last several months I’ve been using my phone completely unlocked. Yeah I know it’s risky but I live in a small town and my phone never leaves my person LOL.I just got so tired of having to type in my passcode all the time because I have to wear a mask eight hours a day.

Recently I decided that I missed Apple Pay too much so I added my passcode back. Within two days my phone has already started unlocking my face with my mask completely on and covering my nose. Has anyone else had this experience? Either way I’m happy with it LOL.

Been enjoying this since 2 months on my LG face unlock. Seems like lg is giving Apple everything sooner or later... What's next, V60 cameras on iPhone 12 pro max? Lidar = Z-camera also 😂😂😂

Thank you for your phone unlock there :)
Ps. Mine doesn’t do that, mask forces the password, no mask FaceID is fine
LOL maybe it’s the type of mask? I hope it’s good enough not to let a picture do it!

I saw a video about this on Twitter in action. If you have a mask on the whole day and unlock your phone a lot, then yeah there is a chance that FaceID might start unlocking with a mask too. That's kinda why Apple states that FaceID will learn any changes you make to your face and adapt to it as time goes. Guess that's what happened here.

Well I’m definitely happy with it one thing I just noticed though is that it doesn’t unlock apps...only my phone. That’s OK because at least I don’t have to type my pin every time I take my phone out of my pocket.

This happens to me now on some occasions. It seemed to have started once I updated to 13.6.1 not sure if a coincidence or not, but it works!

That’s great! I’m just ecstatic LOL I even tried wearing a medical mask and it still works. I also change my pin number to a four digit number for faster typing… Maybe this could have something to do with it I have no idea.

I was on the android all the way up until the galaxy S 10. I prefer iOS though and that’s one thing the LG can’t run.

I wonder if they could make masks out of a material that is compatible with faceid similar to how polarized sunglasses work with faceID while the cheap freebies I have don't work.

‘Machine Learning’ in progress. Phil Schiller talked about that extensively with the launch of the 2017 iPhone X, that not just wearing cosmetics with glasses and a hat, but anything with facial changes, will continue to adapt to your face over the course of time.

Read a lot about this lately, so last night I moved my SIM back to my 11PM. Tried to unlock and lock a bunch with no success with mask. Hopefully over a few days it will start working. Will it work better if you set alternate to mask on, or does it fail to setup? I think I've read both.

I didn’t use alternate appearance. It says face obstructed. I also tried to do the half mask trick but it didn’t work either.

It learned in a day and a half with just my main face scan and I have a four number Pin. Maybe because I literally unlock around 100 times a day. The only reason I know this is because I used to have A Galaxy S10 and it told me how many unlocks per day LOL

nothing says security in purchase decisions quite like advertising your phone in the iPhone section eh bud. i'm sure you're really really satisfied that you just had to shoehorn your opinions

You know I was just thinking I don’t think it works this way since it’s stored in the secure enclave but I can be hopeful. When I get a new iPhone will it transfer my Face ID information over if I use the cable method? Anyone have any idea? I’ll read the white paper if I have to LOL

Update: I got the iPhone 12 Pro on Friday. From Friday until now I’ve purposely let Face ID fail as much as I can throughout the day while wearing my mask until it requires my passcode. It just started letting me unlock with my mask about ten minutes ago. It took patience but it worked!

This has happened to me too! Now my phone unlocks perfectly with or without a mask. When I see people complaining about Face ID and using a mask, I’m happy it doesn’t apply to me.

Good to know! Figuring out how/why this worked for me on my 11PM was my only concern about when I upgrade to my 12PM.
