I currently own an iPhone XR. I am thinking about upgrading to the iPhone 11, but Apple has recently added the refurbished iPhone XS Max to their online store. I like the 11 because it would be faster and have a better camera but I also like the iPhone XS Max because it has a higher pixel density, an OLED display, and a larger display, but it wouldn't be faster than my iPhone XR. I really don't want to spend more than $1000 on a phone so the iPhone 11 Pro is out of my budget.

Which one is the better buy?

Max, the future iPhone lineup is moving towards a larger display. It also has 4GB of RAM compared to 3GB in the XR.

You’ve just got to decide whether you want the better camera, processor over the OLED screen. Personally I’d prefer the 11 but only you can really decide this. They both have pros and cons over each other.

No point going from a XR to a 11.

There is.... if you want the ultra wide camera , 1GB more ram. If he can sell his XR and get a good deal on an 11 he’s fine. Would be worth $300 to upgrade depending on if he wants the better camera.

I would get the max since I prefer the oled screen.

Given those options, I'd say go for the Max. Yes, the 11 does have the new camera, but the wide angle doesn't do much for me, I prefer the zoom camera on the Max. The "speed increase" from the XR to the 11, really isn't noticeable in day to day use either. iPhone's are very well optimized, you're not going to see any real increase in speed from one generation to the next. The XR is a great phone still, at this point you could even wait and see what September has to offer and stash some cash away till then.
