XR….it will do every single thing the 11, 12 or upcoming 13 will. In my opinion the average user can go back several models and really not notice the difference. You aren’t going to know all the crap in that list above me unless you read it on paper or the net. The need to upgrade to the latest and greatest is all mental. I would buy the oldest model I could still get new so I know what I am getting. I do believe that is the XR.

If someone has no social life and doesn't go out to take photos to record memories, none of it will matter. They never go out or have friends, front or rear cameras don't matter. They're on Wi-Fi so LTE, Gigabit LTE, or 5G doesn't matter. Battery doesn't matter at home. Mini programs within WeChat use a lot processing power and RAM. It all comes down to how you live your life.

Have you ever been referred to as melodramatic?? My 7+ does all of that to a very acceptable level. Hey we all choose to spend money how we want. I chastise no one for how they do it. Let’s just call a spade a spade. No matter what realm we pay a lot for things that are just a little bit better.

Sure it is.

4GB RAM.
Better front and rear cameras. Night mode and sharper.
Gigabit LTE and U1 for AirTags support.
Portrait mode for everything/Deep Fusion.
Improved Face ID angle.
Largest battery capacity of any 6.1" iPhone.

Most people care about having good cameras, a big screen, and great battery life. For $100, that's definitely a boatload.

iPhone 8 and XR have essentially the same camera which turns off a lot of people.

not quite my friend

although both phones have a 12MP f 1.8 camera both have different macro lens, and the XR has some Focus Pixels in which the 8/SE doesn’t have any Focus Pixels at all( the 11 lineup has 100% Focus Pixels I think)

Yes, I agree. But the end result is the XR and 8 still can't do Night Mode, while the 11 can. That's a big difference.

Lol ok then, apparently anyone who doesn’t have the 11 has no social life, especially those with the XR. Where do people with the 12 fit in. Or the XS?

To be honest I’d be more worried about the social life of someone who thinks that having 4gb of RAM instead of 3gb is some massive big deal

As I mentioned, yes the camera is better. However as for the other points you mention, the screen size is exactly the same and any battery life difference is minimal. So essentially it is only the camera which is not a boatload. Thanks for proving my point

None of the recent chip upgrades are particularly significant at this point between two consecutive generations, be that A11 to A12, A12 to A13 and so on

Face ID, a totally new design and gestures/no home button are massive differences and improvements
Exactly, which is why I don’t suggest upgrading from one generation to the very next generation unless there’s something you’re getting out of it.

I think it’s funny to call an 8 a dinosaur (unless you’re just lumping it in with the 6, 6s and 7 because the design is essentially the same), but suggest that the XR, which only came out a year later, is a modern marvel.

All this debating makes no difference at this point. The OP has decided to get an 11. I think they should be quite pleased with that upgrade, as it has all the benefits of the XR and more on top of that.

Well my 75yo mum has been using my iPhone 6 Plus for years and it is so slow now so I was tossing up between an XR or an 11 for her. All she does is messages and a call every now and then.

I could get the XR for $597 or the 11 for $999. Not a hard decision, went the XR which should be a huge improvement over the 6 plus. Now to try and teach her to use it with no home button and Face ID lol

When the price difference is this much I would definitely for iPhone XR all day everyday. The 11 is quite an upgrade over the XR, but not $400 difference. I would say the 11 is definitely worth the $100-$150 price difference however, but in your case you went the right direction without any doubt.

yep that is what I thought. I set it up for mum and I am actually surprised how fast it is! She is loving it as well, that is the main thing. Thought it might have been difficult for her to use the face ID and learning how to close apps without a home button but she has gotten the hang of it. And I managed to sell the 6 plus for $200 so it has only cost me $397!
