I just got my iPhone 11 Pro and wondered if putting a clear case on would prevent scratches on the sides on the phone? I know they scratch really easy and some scratches are inevitable through it’s life but just wondered if using a clear case would prevent this?

The only one that is particularly susceptible to scratching is the untreated stainless steel that comes with the silver model.

The PVD coated (colored) variants have proven themselves to be fairly robust with normal use and no abuse.

So, yes, a case would help prevent potential scratches and damage, but it’s as much of a concern on the PVD treated variants.

Just make sure to remove and clean periodically (at least once a week) to stop grit marking the phone. So many people are surprised when they remove a case that has been on for months to find pitting and marking from debris getting in the small openings or sides when in pockets.

A clear case allows to see any possibly harmful particles that get in.
A tight case may prevent more particles but may cause more damage when removing by scraping grit harder when pulling off.

I’ve seen cases scratch devices more than keeping them naked. At least that’s what my experience has been in the last decade. I just take care of the devices enough to not drop them.

As others have stated, the coating on the Non-Silver model holds up well over time. I have had the SG color for the X and XS Max and looked brand new after a year both being in an Apple Leather case. That said, the one downfall to these coatings is there is no fixing them when (if) you do manage to scratch them. The stainless steel on the silver although easily scratched can also be easily fixed with a little polish. Personal preference of course, but I tend to lean away from the shiny stainless on the Silver.

Yeah that’s why I went with the SG. My friend had a silver one with the raw sides and hers were scratched but she doesn’t look after her things really. I on the other hand do so if I regularly take the phone out of the case, once a week I should be good? I’m just so paranoid about scratching this thing because it cost me a fortune and I’m wanting to hold onto it for at least 2-3 years so I want to not scratch it as I’m super OCD and it will bug me ;)
