I have to swipe up 4-5 times for the screen to wake up from being asleep...is anyone else having this problem? I would think even if the phone is not pointed toward my face it should still wake up and turn the screen on?

It does not wake up with a swipe, it wakes up with either a tap or the phone being raised from a surface.

try to swipe in any direction. It won’t budge. It was designed that way.

I didn't think tapping was required...I'm new to a phone without a button and everyone tells me to swipe up to wake it up.

Nope, tap to wake, swipe to unlock/open.

Alternatively, you can turn on “Raise to Wake”. When you lift the phone, it wakes up. No tapping required.

Is this "raise to wake" a setting in the phone I need to activate?

Yes, it’s under Settings > Display and Brightness. It’s an on/off toggle about halfway down the menu.

EDIT: It might be on by default for new phones, I can’t remember. But if not, you can turn it on there.
