Is there any evidence that you disable 5G. 4G LTE had a toggle on early phones, to save battery lifea I’m hoping there’s a toggle to remain on LTE. I’d much prefer battery life over 5G usage. Might be a deal breaker for me. Not willing to deal with crap battery life on my new phone. Mounting evidence battery life will be an issue on the new phones with 5G enabled.

Multiple reviews released today showed the 5G settings. See the Verge review of the 12:https://www.theverge.com/21522988/iphone-12-review

Specifically watch the video, it has footage of the settings screen.
Hmm...that video doesn't show a toggle to disable 5G. It only shows the ability to allow the phone to enable 5G on certain tasks. I'm looking for a 100% disable button found on early gen LTE phones. There's another toggle screen that may allow you to do this, but the review footage doesn't show the alternate screen.

Something to keep in mind in relation to all of this is that settings of this nature are offend carrier-dependent and might or might not be there based on carrier settings (which can also be updated and changed even outside of iOS releases as well).

good that they have an option to switch to 4G if it needs to save battery or the connection doesn't need the speed of 5G.

Still crazy they call it 'smart data' but still don't support metered connections like using a wifi hotspot and not just eating all your data.

Yes

I don’t see any reason why the phone itself doesn’t have that option just as all the previous iPhones still do have a toggle, however it’s my understanding that whether or not you actually see that option is down to each individual network as some allow this and some don’t.
I myself has this some years ago where the network I was with didn’t allow it, then when I switched to another the phone received a carrier update once it recognised the new sim and those options were then available.

Is there a way to tell if the 5G is using the low/mid band frequencies (600Mhz) or the mmWave (24-28GHz) ??
Yes, there’s a different 5G symbol.
When connected to a mmwave 5G network it shows UB or UW (don’t remember) next to 5G. Check out the WSJ review vid by Joanna Stern, she tells a lot about the 5G networks.

Yes and no. Yes to the fact that there's a way to limit power usage intelligently. No to the fact that it doesn't seem like you can disable 5G completely, which is what I'd prefer.
It is not clear from the image, but wouldn't the expectation be that if you select LTE, it will only use LTE? Thus the 5G is disabled?

Wow, how did I miss that. Yup, totally right. Flew right over my head for some reason when I looked at the screenshot. Good news!

Do you not see the LTE option?
For some reason, I did not. Brain was playing tricks on me for some reason. Good news, thanks!

Very useful video by WSJ!

A real world iPhone 12 using 5G by being in an outdoor, next to a tower environment.

I can't imagine mmWave being used in rural areas.....

I have been reading in reviews that the battery life on the iPhone 12 suffers when using 5G. The good news is that there is a setting to force 4G to be used all the time. Also, there is an option that will only use 5G is it does not adversely affect the battery. Don't like 5G then disable its use.

Good to know! I’ve tried to think of instances when I’m on cellular and really wanted faster speed. I’m sure once 5G networks are more fully developed the increased speed and reduced latency will come in handy. For now I think I’ll opt for longer battery life

And I wouldn’t blame you at all. This would have been a good move for Apple to keep making strides in battery life and not just performance. 5G at this stage is day to day useless. I will also be shutting it off completely

The article is down and out about the 12/12 Pro's 5G battery life, but the 4G LTE numbers are pretty outstanding on the 12 Pro. It looks like the Pro even outpaces the mighty iPhone 11 over LTE. I'm curious if the tests were done with Apple's "smart" 5G toggle, or the "always on" 5G toggle.

Regardless, the iPhone 12 Pro is a battery beast over LTE. I was initially worried about battery performance, but it looks to be as good or better than last year's stellar performers.
