This has been happening for the past couple months for me. I upgraded from 11 to a 12 Pro Max, my wife has an 11. She doesn’t receive notifications from me, even while she is on her phone. We have Verizon.

Since the release of the new iPhone 12 models, many new iPhone owners have been running into problems with the Messages app. There are complaints from users who aren't seeing SMS messages from friends, are missing text messages in group chats, and who aren't getting notifications when text messages are incoming.

It's not clear if this is a problem that's related specifically to the iPhone 12 models or if it's a wider issue with iOS 14.1 and iOS 14.2, but the majority of complaints appear to be from iPhone 12 owners.

Those who are experiencing missed SMS messages are simply not seeing some text messages that are sent from Android devices, as MacRumors reader FraXis describes:Most of the people who are missing SMS messages are not seeing them in group chats, but there are reports of some standalone messages not getting delivered. From MacRumors reader TheElmnt:There are also separate complaints of Messages being received, but no notification showing up. This is a problem that even pre-dates the iPhone 12 and iOS 14, as we've had earlier issues with it too. From MacRumors reader bmac4:
Some Verizon users have been able to solve their SMS messages by downloading the Verizon Message+ app, but it's not a complete fix for everyone and it doesn't work for all non-Verizon users. One reader also had success resetting network settings (Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings), but that has not worked for others. Toggling off 5G also does not seem to be a solution.

This is likely a problem that carriers need to address with updated firmware or that Apple needs to fix in an upcoming software update. It appears to be a problem in both iOS 14.1 and iOS 14.2, and it's too soon yet to tell if iOS 14.3 is affected.

Outgoing SMS issue with iPhone 12 Pro with a T-Mobile e-SIM & Physical SIM despite device changes.

With eSIM switched to a physical T-Mobile SIM into a iPhone XS device, the SMS still do not go from T-Mobile to some people with android phones or with android phones apps like sideline or to doc office computer. I can receive SMS from everyone and iMessage work fine. Troubleshoot done with Apple tech support and concluded that it not my iPhone device issue or eSim vs physical sim issue.

This is either a T-Mobile SMS issue to android phones, android apps like side lines and computer based SMS or it could just be a T-Mobile SMS issue. Is anyone else facing this issue and do we know any fix. Already i worked with Apple tech support and T-Mobile tech support. Verified it is not Apple issue. T-Mobile advanced tech team can’t figure out the issue.

Were your issue resolved? Can anyone help update current status of your issue.

I noticed the problem when sending a group notification to my family from my iPhone about a year ago. When I included an android device of a family matter, messages would be delayed by hours or a day. And if I got a reply from an iPhone the message only came to me as if the group did not exist. This was extremely annoying and confusing. I starting sending messages twice, once to iPhones and a second to android phones. Group did not work for android group. BTW I always install latest IOS. I use an iPhone X.

I put a Version Sim into my iPhone and send SMS to the same friends who where not getting my SMS while using T-Mobile physical SIM or eSIM. With Verizon SIM, they get my SMS. Switched back to T-Mobile eSIM and they are not getting SMS. So it is definitely some T-Mobile SMS issue and not an iPhone device. I started another ticket with T-Mobile tech support.

Honestly it’s hard to tell with SMS messages whether it’s the iPhone or the carrier. I’ve always had spotty SMS with any phone I’ve had. Some carriers struggle with it for whatever reason. It’s just generally a super old dying tech.

Can’t say I’ve had any issues with iMessage though, it’s been bulletproof lately.

It's even worse in Canada thanks to the huge monopolies we have here. We pay more than anyone else for cellphone bills yet we get garbage service and SMS issues. Oh, and Rogers frequently sells our numbers to third parties that spam call us several times a day.

Canada's telecom world needs an overhaul, stat.

An update:

SMS messages that I replied or send in the form of pictures or screenshots are received by those who were not receiving my SMS messages before. The SMS that I am typing using my keypad and sending are still not received by the receiver.

I keep having issues event in 14.4.2 when text notification are received, but no text message when I open the messages app, however, I force close the app and re-open it re-appears... any fix yet?

Thanks for sharing your experience. After a month of trouble shooting by T-Mobile tech team, they could not fix the issue. Tech team was saying it is device or apple issue which is a usual tech tactic of passing the buck. I changed device, changed from eSim to physical sim, nothing fixed it.

Today i left T-Mobile and within 5 minutes of number transfer to new provider, the text messages are working fine. So it is a T-Mobile issue or may be carrier competition where Verizon or AT&T deliberately randomly block T-Mobile incoming text to its customers or it could be T-Mobile tactic for some other reason. I think it was deliberately blocked or made broken than any other issue or else the tech team could have easily fixed it. They don’t want to fix it.
I took the decision to port out of T-Mobile as T-Mobile tech team seems to be helpless. This is my story.

Currently I have problems in receiving message notifications from various applications, whatsapp, telegram, etc. I am using the iphone 12 pro max
They do not notify me of the messages, I enter the application and I just managed to see the new messages
they occur eventually, 70% throughout the day.
Reinstall the apps
Reinstall my iphone
Nothing works
Any recommendation?

My one friend that has an Android who I hadn't seen in awhile came into town today. I didn't get an alert of any sort, but did see the red number on my text app. Needless to say I found this thread rather quickly when I searched. I'm Att, 11 Pro, iOS 14.4.2. Maybe 14.5 will fix it. --eyes roll--

Update: I did a group message with him and an iPhone person. I am getting alerts in that case. Weird.

I just switched from Android to iPhone 12. My husband still has an Android and, of course, I cannot receive his texts! So disappointed about this issue still not being fixed since it has been known about since November 2020.
Would have held off on purchasing if I had known beforehand.

I know everyone’s case is different. But 14.5 beta solved my dropped calls and reception issues. Verizon 12 Pro.

I figured it out (for me anyway).

It has to do with Google Voice. I had an Android phone with a Google Voice number and I just switched to an iPhone.

When I sent a text from my iPhone to the person-with-an-Android-phone, all is good. They receive it.

But when they responded, the message was being routed through my Google Voice number. Now on an Android phone, this is automatically resolved. Not so for an iPhone.

I tested this by having the person-with-an-Android-phone send a text directly to my Google Voice number, and when they did, I received it on my iPhone.
I noticed also that the number I received the message from was a generic number. It wasn't their cellular number or even their Google Voice number. I'm guessing that they are the numbers that Google uses to make the actual calls and send the actual messages.
Interestingly, the messages appended the senders names as a prefix (this is how I knew where the messages came from).
Finally, If I just reply back to that number, the person-with-an-Android-phone gets the message.

Anyway, try that and see if it works for you.

Cheers!

Is it possible that this only happens with 5G phones? That is, my 12Pro-initiated texts do not show up on my iPad. The two devices may not be on the same cellular network.

Sorry to join in when I have the iPhone 11 and the opposite problem but I can’t find many people with the same issue as me on here but I have on the Apple community page yet no solution or even explanation as to what is causing it. Has anyone HAD notifications sounds on their iPhone but no actual notifications/message to go with the sound being heard since iOS 14? the past 6 months or so I have received a few fb message tone but no message was there and also the default text tone(note) which isn’t my text tone, mine is set to popcorn but no message or notification to indicate anything to cause the noise. At first I thought it was someone else’s phone or I was going crazy but it’s mine please tell me I’m not the only one? Have already checked that none of my apps set to sounds only. It’s only very occasionally probably because I have my phone on silent most of the time but I just wanted to know if it was update related to the iOS14 or the iPhone 11. I have Bluetooth on everyday due to having a fitbit watch but I don’t get notifcations or vibrations on that anymore.

Just upgraded my iPad and after logging in my group chats with mixed iPhone/android phones is now labeled “outgoing” and only shows my texts. Everyone’s replies now arrive in a separate chat.

I completely erased my iPad and that didn’t fix anything.

Make sure that your iPad is turned on in settings on your iPhone under text message forwarding
That is also turned on.

I’m getting my messages on my iPad but the group text is now labeled “outgoing” and only my texts are in it.

Everyone’s replies arrive in their own separate text message thread

And its working correctly on your iPhone?
