I think that’s because it’s the first 5G iPhone and considered to be much more future-proof compared to the 11/11 Pro. The pandemic could also have some influence with other newer phones retaining their value better. With that being said, I turned off the 5G on my 12 Pro to save battery life. 4G/LTE is more than enough for my needs…today at least.

I believe the 12 is holding its’ value more than the 11 did earlier because of a number of factors: chip shortage supply constraints and an increased post-lockdown demand surge. Either way, when the 13 comes out, I‘m upgrading and giving my 12 Pro Max to DW. Her 11 goes to son & DIL…
Your Daughter Wife or your Dear In Law?

You and me both!

Woooo! (Mr Flair, WWF) that’s a big move, curious if you’ll miss the pro camera?

It’s been the same in demand for resale like every other previous iPhone model: don’t trade in to Apple (via Brightstar), always go for local resale market online. You’ll alway get the top dollar.
I’ll certainly miss the camera, and my favorite iPhone would be a mini Pro.

Your little nephew needs an iPhone 12? Boy times have changed, and children are spoiled. I can only image how self-entitled kids will be 10 years from now. Is this where I start the next sentence with: "Back in my day, we would use two cans tied together with string...". ;)
I got my daughter a new 12 mini for her first ever phone. You see back on Mother’s Day, I had a used, several year old, iPhone 8. I could have given her that, or I could have used it to trade in on a new iPhone 12 free with credits through T-Mobile. And I didn’t have to add a line to get the free with credits. I had already done that back when TMo gave out a free line just because. So for the $40ish in taxes, I got her a new battery, new design and future proofed phone that downloads at 70-100 mbps with 40gb of 5G hotspot for her iPad.

This probably has to do with the falling dollar and everything going up in price. Have you looked at the used car market lately? iPhone 11 has likely lost less value than iPhone XR did a year ago, and so on.
The used car market is the way it is right now because of the lack of used cars. Everyone is buying and no one is selling. If the dollar was falling then the same thing would be happening to the new car market. I made a killing off of selling my used car.

The used car market is a different story though. :D
That is a supply and demand situation.
I’m going to go out on a limb and suggest used iPhone prices are a supply and demand situation, too.

The used car market is still a bad example because, as others have said, it’s driven by constraints on new cars which drives, no pun intended, people to an alternate resource.

I need to replace my SE 4" soon! If 12 Mini is discounted or Apple makes a 13 Mini Pro, I be first in line!

There wont be a 13 Mini Pro most likely, but there will be a regular 13 mini with a slightly larger battery though!

Anyway no surprises the 12 series retaining value due to the newer iphone 4 design, 5G, OLED etc. All 12 series just fantastic across the board.

I agree with the overall point of this article, but using the highest capacity models for stats seems potentially misleading. The base capacity models are by far the most common model sold and the most available for resale, driving the price down quicker than the more limited supply higher capacity models.

And help your daughter to aspire for the better quality in things she owns down the road? Now sell that iPhone 8 and purchase some stock ;)

We all know that higher capacity phones loose more value. They should used based storage models. This is no different than buying a base model of a car vs loaded.

The world shutting done has nothing to do with it? Actually surprising resale had much value at all.

With 5G on T-Mobile I get about 1-2 bars extra signal everywhere I go. So for me its not about the speed. And I haven't noticed any less battery life compared to my 11S, not saying I wouldn't get better life on the 12 with it turned off.

The same thing is happening in the new car market. New RAV4 plugins, e.g., are commanding $5K over MSRP. A friend recently bought a Rogue and had to pay very close to MSRP. Same is true with the housing market, groceries, etc.

Traded the 8 in. Rocking moderna stock since right after the pandemic began. Thanks for the advice

My daughter have an 11, and I’m going to upgrade her next year to the 12, so she’ll be future proof for a few years.
