I’m thinking of something that’s not quite a case but more of just a layer of plastic on the back of the 12 mini that would eliminate the camera bump.

I’ve always gone caseless with my phones, partially because I don’t like how cases make buttons feel squishy and I was wondering if anyone knew of a case that left the buttons intact but covered the back so the camera bump disappeared

I also go without a case, but I guarantee that you’re looking for The Veil by Caudabe. Always been the best minimalist “case” that makes the camera bump disappear.

I sure hope that the Veil photos are just renders... because the centering of the lightning port cutout looks rather poor, and the speaker holes are misaligned as well...

No, this seems to go around the sides of the phone. A backplate just would attach to the back of the phone via the magsafe magnet and leaves the sides exposed. It helps eliminate the camera bump and helps with scratches when you out the phone down on a surface.

So the search term you are looking for is frameless iPhone Mini case. Try that on Google, Amazon, eBay, and AliExpress. These have no side protection and use the iPhone's native buttons. BTW, yes, all Apple first party cases use added buttons for all except the alarm/ring silence slider but they preserve the clickyness of bare buttons generally (I have selected demo ones in the store over new in the box ones because they were not as clicky).

The other possibility for you is to search for minimalist cases. These can be as thin as a fraction of a mm and basically only offer some scratch protection. None that I looked at would meet your need for eliminating the camera bump.

I now have 5 iPhone Mini cases waiting for my new iPhone arrival tomorrow. I really want to make the Mini as narrow as possible for my short fingers for one handed use. I came up with the idea of modifying a case to remove the side protection (95% plus of all drops hit the corners only), only to discover several days later the idea wasn't original. The best implementation of "frameless" is the Rebel case (search for videos with 50 ft drop tests) but not available yet for Mini (and the company is notorious for being unresponsive).

I did get two frameless covers, but both are highly unsatisfactory to me, really only providing scratch protection, not drop protection. So I'm going with my original plan to modify a full case, at least until Rebel becomes available for the Mini.

Another idea for you is to buy a Magsafe cover and cut off the entire frame. I'd bet between the camera hump and the magnets that it will not shift uncomfortably while holding it. Then you would have exactly what you want!

Thank you! This is exactly what I was looking for. And I've debated on cutting off the frame, but I'm not great at cutting paper

I'm also looking for something similar, only without any corner coverage. I'm envisioning something like the iPad Smart Folio, only without the front cover. It would attach magnetically to the back.

I've been searching through Aliexpress and haven't been able to find such a thing. I'd even consider something sticky, but can't find that either. The "skins" are too thin--I want it thick enough to eliminate table wobble from the camera bump.

Something like this would be perfect. Motorola did this year ago on their Z line using magnetic backplates that offer protection and level the camera bump. This should be totally doable on the 12 line using the magsafe magnet.

wow, you're completely right. The veil looks WAY unaligned.

I have a Dremel with cutting disk similar to an angle grinder with a cutting disk and most of the work is cutting through hard plastic. There is a straight line to follow so it should look OK - but I don't care so much about looks. I also have sanding attachments to clean up a little.

Now if you are interested in doing something similar with a Magsafe case for just the back, I'd suggest using one made of hard plastic. Doing something neat on a silicone case for example would be tough. Perhaps for that, slice the corners so the top and bottom edges will fold away as you put a metal ruler (perhaps a carpenter's square) and slice along the edges with a utility knife. Adjustments would be really hard.

I'm also looking for something similar, only without any corner coverage.
Here is one other idea. I've seen some cases that come with template software so you can print your own design and have it show through the clear bottom. That could help you print your own or make a hard template for the material you are going to use. Or if you have Photoshop skills... But clearly there is a demand here that some entrepreneur will fill. I wouldn't be too surprised with the whole Mini small phone excitement among those of us who have waited so long to see more choices of frameless cases. I've only seen half a dozen ones that are currently made for the Mini.

I have a glass protector for the back too! I alway start with a Apple leather case and as the phone ages, I take the case off and put the glass back on and go naked!

Yeah, what I basically want is a screen protector but just for the back of the iPhone 12 Pro Max. I'm not really worried about the front breaking, but the back glass is the concerning part. I've got a very slim clear case from Totalee (not their super slim frosted ones but a very thin rubber case) that I'm going to try out tomorrow when mine arrives. Got the same case for my wife on her iPhone 12 Mini, which also arrives tomorrow. Might post a review of them either this weekend or next. If it doesn't happen, someone poke me, lol. I love the Pacific Blue and my wife loves the Green Mini, so we wanted to be able to keep the true colors without something that is bulky, has logos on it, or otherwise looks weird. Hopefully it fits the bill. Just looking at it in hand it seems to be fairly slim. It's interesting that my wife's iPhone SE from 2016 with a case on fits reasonably well inside the Mini case, except being thicker. She's not happy that her new phone is bigger in any amount, but it's better than she expected.

Actually, the generic Chinese one is adequate. Some resilience and drop protection. The Switch Easy is super stiff and may provide some protection just from that. But I doubt it, and for those with several cases, the Switch Easy is not easy! Had to use a credit card to help remove it. Very tight.

Bigger news, watched an everythingapplepro video from a few hours ago doing drop tests of the Mini/Pro Max. Pretty interesting. However for me, he said gen2 cases will arrive around the holidays. Do take that with a grain of salt, but to me it means it will be happening for the 12 models. That is good news.

Did you find a skin for the back that makes the camera bump flat? I've only seen cases that do that, but don't want to cover the front or sides at all.
And not sure how I'd go about cutting the Apple Leather Case to do that. Has anyone done it?

I never did sadly! I'd love to hear if anything has come out since though.

Bump
Still looking for this. Im surprised that no one has come out with one yet.
I was thinking of buying one of these and cutting out the camera bump. Whoever makes this could make one without the camera bump, but its basically exactly what Id be looking for
