I played around with it at The Apple Store and it's very nice. I have a 7+ which works fine for me but the 12 Mini would be nicer. The performance of the 12 over the 7 is insanely huge. I get by fine with the 7+ but speed is always nice.

The other things is that I'm a runner and usually take my phone with me. I actually bought five pairs of shorts specifically because they could hold the 7+ without bouncing around while I run. The 12 mini screen size is almost as large as the 7+ but it's a lot smaller and lighter. I can get $250 off at Xfinity Mobile with an upgrade. Can I do better after the 13 comes out? My understanding is that there won't be a 13 mini as the 12 mini isn't selling well and Apple often discounts the -1 model when the new models come out.

I generally prefer the metallic colors but I guess it doesn't matter that much with a case.

OP, there will be a 13 Mini in late 2021, but according to Ming Chio (one of the most reliable apple rumours sources), the Iphone line up in 2022 will not include a 5.4" iphone mini size. I hope the rumour does not come to fruition as i absolutely love the 5.4 form factor, but we will have to see what happens.

Anyways glad you like the 12 Mini, as you have seen for yourself going into the Apple store and having a feel for the device. A part of the reason why the 12 mini has not had as many sales is partly due to people not being able to go into stores due to COVID lockdowns, so hopefully now the 12 mini sales will pick up, with more people doing what you have done.

Edit - There are some deals going on the 12 mini so take advantage e.g. In the UK where im from, Amazon UK are selling 12 Minis for £599, so £100 off RRP, and we hardly ever get deals like this on Apple products, so if your in the US you should be able to get an even better deal.

I was in the Apple Store to get the batteries changed on my MacBook Pros. It appears that it is difficult to get into an Apple Store to browse products. There is a short wait for Genius Bar appointments and a moderate wait to pick up stuff that you purchase. There was a very long line some distance from the store for Apple Customers going in to look at stuff. I'd guess that the line was about 30 minutes. There were people in the line standing, sitting and some were eating lunch. I personally would not wait 30 minutes to look at products and I suspect most people wouldn't either. I also looked at the 27 inch iMac while I was there. I was planning to buy one until I read the more concrete Apple Silicon products that might be out this summer.

So the next question is 2020 or 2021? I don't think that the 2021 will have that much more than the 2021.

I would buy it at the Xfinity Mobile store as it's a standalone store away from the mall. They have them on display but you can't pick them up and play around with them. The Apple Store doesn't support Xfinity Mobile as it's not one of the big four (or is it three now?) providers in the US.

I checked the trade-in of my 7+ and it's about $71. So I'll just keep it as a small tablet at home.

iPhone Mini might be an every other year release. If you need it now, buy.

Amazon isn't an authorized seller of unlocked iPhones here in the US.

We do have great deals on the iPhone 12 series (up to $700 off) but they require trade in and are tied to a "contract" with a major carrier.

I got a 12 mini today via work as a replacement for my iPhone 7. Still using an 8plus for my personal usage. Interesting to get used to face unlock etc.

Oh god yes that's true about the Apple stores at the moment, you have to make an appointment and wait in line and are not allowed to browse anything, its so annoying. I just want the the Apple stores to go back to normal, so I can pop in, play with the products, charge my phone, bug the staff with technical questions, watch some presentations lol, its a great place to waste an hour or so.

Honestly, its still like 5 months to go until the next are released, so if you really want a 12 mini get it now. The 13 Mini will likely have a slightly larger battery and slightly better cameras from rumours, possibly Touch ID but maybe not. We don't know for sure. Good idea to keep your 7+ as a back up.

Why would anyone upgrade now if they have a working iPhone, we are 3 month away from the iPhone 12s'13 series, definitely WAIT!!! 😊👀📱

Interesting. I went to the local Apple Store last Friday to pick up my new iPad and there was no line and no wait time. Granted, I don't think browsing was allowed. Very smooth transaction, though. Took us longer to pickup our food from The Cheesecake Factory.

I have been interested in Face ID as I live in a cold region which can do a number on your fingertips. I have to recode my fingerprints every couple of weeks during the winter. I think that washing hands a lot during COVID is also not good for Touch ID. It's also a bit of a pain when I'm hot and sweaty in the gym or running outside. I have push-buttons on my headset to control music but sometimes you need the phone.

My local Apple Store was very busy most of the time before the pandemic. The reason is that our state has no sales taxes and it's just over the border from a state with sales taxes and you have to drive 35 minutes to get to the first Apple store from there. So we get a lot of shoppers looking to avoid sales taxes on their Apple (and other) gear.

I actually am not aware of other retailers in my area with this issue right now. It must be a pure demand issue.

I'd say that the store is only half-staffed right now. In normal times, there were about 30-35 Apple staff in the store and more in the back room and a few in the front to maintain order. They could really use a much bigger store.

I would like to have Touch ID and Face ID at the same time. Battery life is always a plus; performance isn't an issue. The iPhone 14 is insanely fast compared to what I'm using right now.

Agreed with this, at the very least if no iPhone 13 mini comes out you might get the 12 at a discount. If your current phone still works my opinion is to wait.

As most have suggested, at this point I’d wait… then decide if the new mini model is worth the price or if not get a 12 for a lot less.

WAIT!

And there is one very, very good reason to do so. The rumored smaller notch!

As it is, the notch takes up a lot of horizontal space on the mini. So much in fact, that the icons on the right side just barely fit. The 13 mini will probably address this. :)

I've never had to deal with the notch and I suspect that I wouldn't have a problem with it. I've used all sorts of tech over the past 50 years and I can generally get used to most anything.

But it seems like the chorus is saying wait and that seems to be the better idea for me. I do not need a new phone right now. I'm doing the same thing with Macs. I have two old MacBook Pros and am waiting patiently for the M1X.

When the new phone comes out you are unlikely to get the really good deals on it for a while. If that is a driver for you, then go with the 12 mini now as they are pushing deals on it now.

It sounds like there will be a 13 mini. I hope that once things are back to normal and people can actually hold the phones in their hands, fewer people will be scared off by online reviews where reviewers who normally use Max phones review the mini and call it "tiny". it's not. 🙂

The 13 will probably have a few improvements but it is unlikely that any will be "OMG I HAVE to have that" better.

I actually would wait. Yeah, you get the 12 Mini much cheaper now than the 13 Mini in 4 months. But it could have TouchID integrated, not known atm, plus the sensor stabilizer from the Max according to newer rumors. Plus a smaller notch etc. To me that would be worth the wait and some extra cost. Plus it would be the last Mini, so if you choose to keep it for a long time it is worth buying the last available Mini cause of future updates and more.
