does anyone know how to make this forum white again? I'm all for dark mode, but it just doesn't work on this site.

not sure if you are trolling or simply don’t know that you have to deactivate the dark mode either in the web browser or on the iPhone/iPad to have it bright again.

Other than the slightly smaller battery, I care not for any of these other feature rumors.

I don't get the point of this article... maybe Apple don't want to be cannibalise by this model or what?
I can live perfectly fine without all of that features.

I think that they should also mention what do you get:

- Small form factor phone that you can hold and operate with one hand and carrying it easily in the pocket.
- If the rumours are accurate, the screen will have the most pixel density across the line (including the pro's). This is combination with the smaller screen, will make the things to look sharper than ever.
- The battery will be smaller but you will save battery thanks to do not have 120hz refresh rate, for example :) so I expect a solid battery life.
- You will save some extra bucks that could be used for pairing it with an Apple Watch SE.
- I'm not a camera guy, so I'm fine with that, in any case will be better than my 6's camera..

As a side note... is a pity that Apple did not offer this as a Pro model, it would be even a more successful phone, as most of the people want it for being small, not for the price point.

A lot of comments that LIDAR is of no interest..... However, it will have a ’secondary’ benefit with photography.
In being able to judge the distance of objects in a nanosecond will provide the computational answer to instant ’Depth of Field’.
A clever software developer could then use the information to allow on the fly focus ‘after the shot is taken’.

It should also assist in greater control to DoF, unlike today where you often find artefacts blurred when they should not be.

Following up, here are the battery capacities I have in my chart of the past "smaller" models.
So the anticipated new iPhone 12 Mini looks to have significantly more battery capacity than any of the older models that it is likely to be replacing. Which should (maybe) translate into longer performance time between chargings.

Awesome. Thanks for that.

One thing to keep in mind is that like-for-like, phones with an OLED screen tend to have shorter battery lives due to drawing more power when the screen needs to be used near its max brightness. Mind you, all this was discovered before Apple introduced Dark Mode in iOS, but even so, it would still hold true.

From Apple’s product line, take the difference in battery life between the iPhone XS (5.8”) and XR, which had very similar battery capacity, yet the XR was the longest lasting iPhone (ever?) at the time, while the XS was a disappointment. Only major difference was the OLED.

Lidar: don't care
5G: don't care
OLED vs LCD 120hz whatever: don't care
battery: hm well, as long as its "not bad"
no telephoto: don't care, ultra wide is more useful for me.
That’s...everything new. At this point, you should just get an iPhone 11.

You don't get that people are not happy with the lack of usable size. You either have the oldschool SE with small 4.7" screen and big bezels, or the giant and heavy XR/11, or the very expensive (and still somewhat bulky) XS/11Pro. It is/was super frustrating for most people.

The 12 Mini is the XR/11 but in a finally reasonably sized package.
And lets be honest, LiDar, 5G and 120Hz are everything else but crucial. If you need those, get the Pro. Battery is most important for me and majority of users. Combine that with small bezels, a solid LCD/OLED screen, good dual cam, good battery capacity and a moderate price -> perfect sweet spot for many buyers. Including me, an iPhone 7 owner.

I do. I agree completely. That's why I'm planning to get the 12 mini, as well.

I agree about LiDAR not being crucial, but what if you want those features in the reasonably-sized package? What you described was a small iPhone 11, not a small iPhone 12.

Earlier in this thread I outlined why getting 5G NR into this year's phones is so important, so I won't repeat it here. But there is just as much dissatisfaction with people who want the Pro's cameras (or at least the telephoto lens), the XDR display, or the stainless steel frame; but just want it in a reasonably-sized package.

If Apple had produced three models: 5.4", 5.8", and 6.5"; all with the same features and quality, I think everyone would've been happy. I really couldn't care less whether they call them "Pro" or not. But leaving out the telephoto lens, while putting in the useless ultrawide is a crappy way for Apple to "differentiate" between models. Now, I have to choose between an unwieldy, large device to get the camera I really need and suffer with that size, or get the 12 mini and suffer without the features I need. It just sucks that they went out of their way to make two 6.1" models, one of which no one is going to buy, but couldn't be hassled to make a 5.4" "Pro."

LIDAR is more interesting for better portrait mode-the AR features is not something most will care about.

Agree. FaceID is the one thing that would make me hesitate to go from my iPhone 8 to this new 11 Mini. Been using Touch ID for many years now and am quite used to unlocking my phone regardless of orientation, lighting, or whether I’m even looking in its general direction. And the unfortunate fact that we’ll all be wearing masks into next year just reinforces this.

Before wearing masks were a thing, you'd of used the phone for a week tops and not miss TouchID at all, i was like you always saying the removal of TouchID would be a deal breaker, now i could care less after using FaceID

I preferred Touch ID because I could just unlock the phone without having to tilt it towards me. Face ID is more convenient for some things, and less convenient when riding motorcycles, but really I haven't noticed that FaceID is more reliable than TouchID. Even without masks I had to enter my passcode more with Face ID because if Im looking at notifications on the lockscreen but don't hold it facing me the phone will register that as several failed attempts to unlock.

Of course now that there isn't a home button, using Touch ID with the phone on the table will be more involved than Face ID, but its still better with a motorcycle helmet on for the same reason as when wearing a mask.

Literally the only feature I want that my OG SE lacks is the ability to read/write non-powered NFC tags, a feature which I believe debuted with the 7. But I refuse to get a Hummer-sized phone to do it, so this phone should be perfect for me. Honestly they could leave out 5G and cameras altogether and charge $1k and so long as I can use it one-handed, I’d still buy it.

I do wish it had Touch ID in the power button though. Law enforcement being able to compel you to unlock your phone with Face ID concerns me. Plus masks will be a nuissance.

are you sure about that? I'm on Chrome i don't see anything under appearances making it black?

I've gone the other way and updated to a 11 Pro Max ( from a 6s) last year. The bigger screen is great. But i understand a lot of people prefer smaller screens.
