I've been deciding between the 12 Pro and the Mini, and one of the things I "lose" if I get the Mini instead of the Pro would be better battery life and the telephoto lens.

But I don't think the battery life would be much of a problem to me. I almost always carry a powerbank anyway.

I'm coming from a XS whose 2,659 mAh battery is now at 83% capacity. Doing the math, 83% of 2,659 is 2,206.97, which is slightly lower than the Mini's out-of-the-box capacity of 2,227 mAh. [I don't know if comparing batteries works this way, but yeah. 😅] Given that, all other things being equal, I think I'll manage.
I’m coming from an xs as well.

I returned the iPhone 12 pro.

looking forward to the mini

2 hours longer battery life than iPhone X and iPhone SE 2. Please. Get some perspective.
Everything is relative I guess. I went from the iPhone 6 Plus to an iPhone 7 (non-Plus model) because at the time I got tired of lugging around the bigger 6+. The 6+ had great battery life, but that was because it was big enough to contain a larger capacity battery. The 7 with its much smaller capacity battery ran it down much more quickly. I learned my lesson and stuck with larger models after that. Bottom line, if you want longer battery life, buy a phone with a larger capacity battery than you can get in the "mini" versions of phones.

According to who? Apple only lists “video playback” which is overall vague.

I’ve been reading reviews all morning and battery life is my largest concern that seems to be so user dependent. This is the size I want, but the 6.1 has the battery I need. A MagSafe battery pack could save this for daily driving

How is video playback vague? The screen is on, the video is being processed and decoded. It's a good measure.

All iPhones have insufficient battery capacity. There are there 2 basic solutions for it. The customer can buy a battery case to extend operation or Apple can increase battery capacity in their designs. Apple might also modify their OS to allow a user to selectively throttle processor performance in order to reduce the phone’s demand for power.

Do you really need a battery case though? Trying to picture a situation where one would be out for the entire day without some sort of bag they can throw an external battery in.

I really wish Apple would realize that for many people, an extra 1-2 mm of thickness would not be an issue if it meant realistic all-day battery life.

Thinner-and-lighter is directly at odds with battery life in this post-removable-battery world, and not having a battery that lasts all day makes for bad user experience.

If Apple called it iPhone SE 3 instead of iPhone 12 mini, would it sell better? Justifying the small battery? Sure, why now ;)

Corrrrrrrrrect

"Another reason I can't fully get on board with this thing is that it sits in a strange place in Apple's ‌iPhone‌ lineup. At $699, this is the cheapest version of the ‌iPhone 12‌ the company makes, but last year you could get a phone with a bigger screen and much better battery life for the same price."
Something something not everyone wants a bigger screen or needs better battery life something something

Well that’s not good at all. My average over the past 7 days is 4h26m, and I tend to end the day at around 50%... on my original SE! Granted it has a newer, larger-than-OEM battery, but still, I would have expected battery life to have advanced over the past 4 years, not diminished so greatly.
How many mah is the battery you have in your SE?

I would trust Panzarino. His reviews are the gold standard now, and he says the battery life is good.

It‘s not a good measure for general usage, because video decoding exercises specialized portions of the hardware and/or CPU instructions that aren’t much used in other tasks, which is likely to either overestimate or underestimate general battery consumption.

Oh, wow! May I ask why you returned the Pro? Was it even more unwieldy than a XS?

This wasn't directed at me, but I'm doing the same, returning my 12 Pro for the mini. I never wanted the big phone, if anything I wanted smaller. Lighter and more pocketable, but without compromises. The mini feels like that. I had the 11 Pro before the 12 Pro - the 12 Pro is obviously even bigger, even harder to use 1-handed, and despite the spec weight, just feels heavier. I'm excited for the size and weight of the mini

The SE1 was considered to have excellent battery life at the time though.

When they say disappointing battery life, like how disappointing? I have iPhone 7 and it seems ok, I would like to last more sure but not too bad.
I don’t think phone gamers are the target audience for the mini. I just want to communicate and navigate without having to carry a phablet in my pocket. Going to replace my 6s which has served me well for these purposes with a 12 mini.

comments like these make me laugh where they consider iPhone 12 mini...actually mini. The screen is 14% larger than iphone 7 and that was a large phone. As for gaming, this screen is 5.4 larger than Sony's portable PSP at 4.3 and Nintendo 3DS XL at 4.88.

iPhones 4 at 3.5 is mini phone for communicating and navigating, this has a larger screen than Galaxy Note(5.3) from 2011 refered to as a phablet! This is complete brain washing by Apple!
