I believe my battery health is degrading faster from wireless/magsafe charging.

So my launch date iPhone 12 Pro is now at 94% battery health. It sat at 100% for months after buying but since using a Magsafe charger the last 2.5-3 months, the battery health has dropped 6%. When I owned the iPhone 11 Pro last year, I saw a similar more rapid decline of battery health once I started using a wireless charger. Twelve months into owning the device, it was down to 87%.

Two data points are not enough to make a conclusion of course. I have read about the increase in heat from wireless charging that might cause the battery to wear down. I have Apple Care+ and curious when I can make a case that my battery is degrading faster than normal.

Anyways, are others experiencing something similar that they can attribute directly to wireless/magsafe charging?

I'm not an expert, but I've read lots of theories that wireless charging is more taxing on the battery, which is why I've stopped using them (I hand my phones down to my parents, so I need the batteries to last as long as possible).

I have been using wireless chargers for my 12 Pro Max. And its been 3 months and my battery health is still 100%.

I have been using wireless and magsafe, my 12 pro activated on Nov 18, 2020 is at 97%. I don't really have anything to compare that with, as I am not too obsessed with battery capacity. I typically give my old phone to a family member or trade it in for a new one every 12-18 months.

Wireless charging has two issues: heat and inconsistency. Generally Li-ion batteries don't like either; rather they want to be right about at room temperature and they want an uninterrupted trickle charge.

Whether those things negatively affect the battery enough to degrade it in a way you would notice is still up in the air. My guess is it does.

As someone who has read a LOT about battery health, I basically arrived at the conclusion that some batteries are bulletproof. You can charge them with a flamethrower, and they will come out at 100% health after 100 years. However, for the majority of batteries charging wirelessly or with higher wattages will cause increased heat, and thus lower the battery health. At this point, I think it's fair to say that heat=bad for batteries, and MagSafe just happens to combine two factors (high wattage + wireless) together. I wouldn't say it's the best idea if you are concerned about your battery health.

I was using wired and older QI charger for 12 Pro Max. It was at 99% battery health on March 3, that same day my MagSafe charger came via Amazon and I started using that along with the 20W charging brick I bought in Nov.

I've also changed the ways I've charged the phone, leaving if off the charger overnight, not charging constantly during the day...using wired lightning cable. I don't know what to think anymore. If QI, or the MagSafe has affected the battery health. If previous iOS on older phones showed inaccurate "health" (ex. XS Max after 2 years showed 94% health)

The health of the battery today on 12 PM is 93% 🤷🏻‍♂️
It stinks, but I'm tired of obsessing about it.

I have a launch day 11 Pro that has been charged almost exclusively with a 7.5W Qi pad and it’s at 85%.

I’ve always assumed that wireless charging degrades the battery faster than wired charging because of the extra heat that’s generated. That being said, the convenience far outweighs this potential risk in my opinion. I try to just use my phone and not worry too much about its current battery capacity.

ONly one month in and using 3 different types of magsafe, still at 100%

I am thinking it might matter which brand of magsafe if you arent using Apple branded. Also might matter with type of usage and if you let it sit on it extended hours.

My battery pack magsafe won't charge above 80% for some strange reason, maybe by design for the amount of heat it creates.

My car magsafe seems to charge pretty slowly.

For my desktop I have a Choetech magsafe with stand. But I dont let it sit there all day after it gets a full charge.

Have been using apple MagSafe charger from launch on my 12PM and it’s still 100%. Never charge overnight and I usually charge between 30-75%

Thanks for everyone's replies. My battery is down to 92% now and I think it's actually more to do with the iPhone 12 than the magsafe charger. I am seeing this pop-up quite a bit in the other sections of the forum.
