So I just noticed that there’s a spec of dust that’s clearly visible in my wide lens. It’s inside because I’ve wiped it furiously and I couldn’t get it to come off.

I’ve checked and it isn’t viable (at least not that I can see) when taking pictures but I’m worried more dust will eventually get in?

I’m pretty OCD when it comes to the camera lens and I cannot stand dust even on the outside. I’m pretty upset this is a thing because I know I wouldn’t receive a new 256gb Pacific Blue 12 Pro till at least the end of November or so. I’ll contact Apple and see what can be worked out though.

Has this happened to anyone else in previous iPhones? Did it get worse overtime?

This happens pretty often. During launch period, the Apple Store might just replace the unit. If they have time, the store will take it apart to remove the dust under the camera.

Yeah I’ll book an appointment but they’re so full that I can’t even see what’s open currently via Apple Support smh

Depending where you live and how busy it is around there, you can try doing a walk-in. I think they always have a few phones on the side for replacement purposes.

Just got off the phone with Apple and they will contact my local Apple store to see if they can fit me in for a repair even though there’s no slots open via the Apple Support app. They will be calling me back within the hour here so let’s hope it goes through.

I had this on my iPhone XR and brought it in. It wasn't visible in pictures, just sorta bugged me that my new phone had dust in it. Apple tech said they could open the phone up and remove it, but there was also the chance more dust could get in if they open it. I declined and honestly forgot about it until I saw this thread. It never got worse. I think I just tend to over-analyze new phones.

Good to know it didn’t get worse overtime. Since it’s not impacting pictures I think I’ll just stick with it. I have Apple Care + so I’m not too worried if it get worse I’ll just have them repair or replace it.

It's not unusual for camera lenses for interchangeable lens cameras to have some dust inside even when new. But usually the dust isn't visible in images. If you can't see the dust in images, I would just ignore it. I definitely wouldn't allow an Apple employee to try to repair it.

Here's an article that addresses dust in lenses:

https://photographylife.com/what-to-do-with-dust-inside-lens

That was my worry too, that more dust would get in so I’ve decided to just keep it since it isn’t impacting my photos.

Hello I am from Malaysia.

Happened to me on primary lens on 1st unit.

Apple Premium Service Center fully refunded me then i purchase the 2nd unit, this time dust spec another lens above Lidar with three piece of spec dust and another two dust spec at the wide angle lens.

I didn’t expect this from an ultra high end phone. I didn’t experience this before from high end Android phones over a decade.

Bad Luck? I thought I am the only one until the 2nd unit therefore I Google up and now I am here sharing the same.

Apple Premium Center is preparing to loan me an iPhone 8 tomorrow for me to send this phone back for a replacement (not repair).

I mean who will pay a few thousand for a brand new phone to settle issues by repairing? During manufacturing also have dust, what worst if then open up and repair? Very poor Quality control!

I'm no expert, but I have a similar effect with even my dslr when pointed at a bright light. I think the phenomenon in your pictures is just normal lens flare.

the smaller ones yes or dust that I can wipe off, but the large one you see it has to be a dust cause it stays in the same spot regardless how I take the picture.

here is another shot, something even different lighting scenario
