So are all three sensors larger with improved performance over the 12 Pro?

Or is it only the wide angle that gets the better sensor?

The way I read it....seems like it's only the wide angle with the improved image quality over the 12 Pro?

Kinda dictates which one I get...
 
If you go to the Apple Store app and scroll down to the side-by-side comparison of the cameras, you’ll see how they differentiate.

Only the main camera (aka: wide) is getting the improvement and Sensor Shift OIS.

The ultra wide lens is the same on the entire iPhone 12 lineup, from the Mini to the Max. And now with Night Mode. Hallelujah!!!

For the telephoto (aka: zoom) lens the zoom is slightly longer (52mm vs 65mm), however, it does have a slightly smaller aperture of f/2.2, compared to the f/2.0 on the smaller iPhone 12 Pro. So the zoom lens on the smaller 12 Pro will perform better in low light situations. There is no Sensor Shift for this lens on the Pro Max.

The wide angle is the “normal” sensor, and the only one with some improvement. I gather the combination of on-sensor image stabilisation and a bigger sensor primarily translates to better low light photos with somewhat less noise, while in ideal conditions the difference will be marginal.

Apple's claim of a 47% increase in Back Wide Image Sensor on the 12 Pro Max is a bit misleading.

The pixel size used to be 1.4 um.

Now, for this sensor, & ONLY this sensor, it's 1.7 um.

1.7 um / 1.4 um = 21.4% increase

So, 47% - 21.4% = 25.6% (of the increase in size) is for something else !

My guess, Image Stabilization purposes of 12.2 Mpx photos.

So, the Back Wide Image Sensor in the 12 Pro Max is ~15.4 Mpx in size (i.e., resolution).

In other words, there is a Border around the typical 12.2 Mpx size.

The Border would NOT be used for the color-sampling Sensor Shift technology.

But definitely for Image Stabilization.

This represents the first time Apple has had Image Stabilization at the 12.2 Mpx resolution !

Prior to this, always at a reduced resolution (e.g., 4K or 1080p).

And of course, this doesn't include the special case of Low Light Capture, which uses OIS if supported.

Your math is off because you need to compare the area of the sensor. 1.7 x 1.7 vs 1.4 x 1.4, which equates to about 47% increase in AREA.
