Looks like the flicker issue is real. Apparently Apple used a display manufacturer whose QA department could use some attention.

I began noticing it on my iPhone 12 Pro Max when viewing videos in the Amazon Prime and YouTube apps.

While booting the device the Apple logo appears and the whole display flickers (like in ZoneOfTech’s video).

No hate on Apple, just confirming that this issue might be real for some people and hoping they figure out whether it’s software or hardware.

Just got off the phone with Apple Support and created a case and scheduled a callback for next Wednesday, will update if a fix arises.

I have this issue on my 12 Pro. It's very noticeable when I'm using my phone in the dark watching videos or even on the Settings app. I hope this can be fixed with a software update.

Once i saw the title of the video, I turned it off. Not interested in a clickbait YouTuiber trying to turn something into a “gate.”

I hope Apple is able to fix your problem.
Agreed. Trying to change the tune - kind of annoying. And thanks.

Issue description is between 3:15-4:30 if minimizing view time.

My Tapatalk is having a weird flickering issue right now. Apps on my 7+ freeze frequently. I don’t get the fandom. Apple isn’t any better than anything else. Their phones are just as ’y as a Samsung is.

Same me too. Turned off looking at him. Mind you i used to watch him and Leaksapplepro a lot before iphone 12 was released. But dont know why somehow i dont watch them anymore. The leaks kinda turned out true but these clickbait stuff is kinda turn off.

Unrelated update: Used my 12 Pro Max with an 18 watt charger and the left side became uncomfortably warm. 11 Pro Max got warm as well but this was a new level - “emanating heat from steel band” “uncomfortable to hold” warm.

The yellow screen, the flickering, the level of heat have me considering returning this and skipping the 12 series as originally planned (while Apple figures out how to fix the internals on the flat-edge-designed iPhones)

First days it is still syncing/indexing and if you then also fast charge, it will indeed become very warm. Have a little patience and it will probably settle down and become much cooler.
The tint of the screen can be adjusted a bit by turning off the truetone feature, but usually you can’t see the difference unless you compare screens next to each other. You do get used to it. Unless you have night shift on maximum 😁
The flickering of the black screens is something that needs to be addressed. But in the past Apple has always been really good with updates or even recalls/repairs if needed. They will take their sweet time and hardly ever tell you anything but they do solve it.
So perhaps with a bit more patience you can keep the 12. Or perhaps the improvement from 11 to 12 just isn’t big enough to warrant the expenditure?

No direction from Apple (still working on the issue). Also I noticed a green splotch on the screen that appeared when using the display on low brightness in the bottom right corner (difficult to capture in photos).

I was within the return period so swapped for another 12 Pro Max.

The screen was immediately noticeably more “normal” ie the regular white balance compared to the 11 Pro Max, with no yellow discoloration. Absolutely zero issues with flickering.

Looks like there are indeed good panels and a batch of bad panels, at least in my experience.

Pro Max 1: yellow discoloration, did not test flickering, returned
Pro Max 2: yellow discoloration, flickering on boot up and in prime video and YouTube (tested), bluish/green “splotch” at bottom right at low brightness, returned
Pro Max 3: normal color, no flickering, no splotches, feels like a normal iPhone

I am not one to usually nitpick and return iPhones repeatedly but I knew these screen issues would bother me over the course of a year (using phone all day for work)

thanks for coming to my tedtalk

Forgot to add, I hope this does not come off as sensationalist or as trying to make it sound like there’s a display“gate”

The genius reps and customer service were terrific and understanding and swapped the phones while being professional and asking questions to understand the issues

Glad to have AppleCare (even though it wasn’t used in this scenario) and glad to pay a small premium in exchange for service like this
