Dial *3001#12345#* then choose RACH ATTEMPT. Find rsrp (you may have to scroll down to see it) and look at the number. This will be the signal strength in dBm. The higher the number, the better the signal. Keep in mind these are minus numbers so -80 is better signal strength than -90 and so on.

Just checked my Max. RSRP shows -100. I’m on AT&T.

Keep in mind that it doesn’t really update on its own yet. To get a updated value, you need to toggle airplane mode, go back to dashboard and refresh, then go back to each attempt. The RAT menu information is accurate. The bandwidths are correct as well as the band. RAT will also display 1xrtt information such as band class and ec/lo quality.

I've seen conflicting results on this. Sometimes if I just exit and then press the button on the dialer again it will update, other times it will not. Also, sometimes I can go into airplane mode or even turn the phone completely off and then back on again and it still won't update. It's a flaky way to do this but at least it does give an indication of signal strength.

Curious how many bars your phone shows at -100dBm. While -100dBm isn't bad, it's not great. Depending on which room in my house I do the test in, I get anywhere from -75 to -95, all showing 4 bars. Every now and then I may see -100, but if I do the test again, it will be better. So -100 may not be a true indicator for you. You really need to do this a few times to see a true indication of signal strength in any given area.

Right now, it’s showing -94 with 3 bars. Below is screenshot.

EDIT: Makes no difference with wifi off for me, but here is another screenshot:

I'm leaning towards getting a 12 Pro Max. Does it matter where I get it to get one with better reception? I remember Intel was sold at certain carriers, and Qualcomm used to be at Best Buy or something.

I just want to make sure I get one with the best reception (maybe they are all the same now). Should I get it from Best Buy, AT&T, Apple? Thanks!

There is now only one model so it doesn’t matter where you get it.

Apple is using only Qualcomm with the iphone 12 models. Makes no difference where you get it.
