Hi all,

I m new here to this great community 👍🏻 and I followed the keynote regarding the new iPhones.
Currently an iPhone XR user here considering an upgrade but I have not decided yet.
Since the 11 pro (Max) has been discontinued there will probably be a price drop incoming...
Some dealers already reduced the price for 11 pro/max.

So what are your thoughts about the following:

New iPhone 12 vs iPhone 11 pro Max?

The 12 64 GB will be 879 EUR here in germany, but for this money you will get an 11 Pro Max 64 GB in pristine or new/sealed condition from dealers (currently between 850-920 EUR). So price will be the same.

iPhone 12:
- 5G
- New design
- A14
- Ceramic shield
- Magsafe
- Significantly lighter (162 g vs 226 g)
- Dolby vision
- Better Nightmode

iPhone 11 pro Max:
- Larger display
- Triple Camera
- 4x optical Zoom
- Larger battery

5G is not a big thing at the moment here in germany, but will be lets say in 2 years. Difference between A14 and A13 you will not notice. Probably the Camera in the iPhone 12 will be - due to the A14 computing - (slightly) better than the camera in the 11 pro Max, though there will be no telephoto.

I think this is a tough call, but I will opt for the 11 pro Max.
What do you think?

Best regards!

iPhone 12 for an XR user.

reasons are size... a little smaller but same screen size ... lighter weight, 11 Pro max is around 230g, iPhone 12 non pro around 170g. iPhone 12 is the successor to iPhone 11 and XR before. If you want a bigger and WAY heavier phone though and a zoom lens, you should choose the 11 Pro Max. But to me it sounds like iPhone 12 Non Pro would be the better choice for you.

PS: Pro Max has 2x Optical zoom, only 4 times more zoom than the normal wide lens, but it is 2x optical zoom when it comes to real zoom quality.

Hi, thanks for your reply.

Regarding the optical zoom this I did not know.
A bigger phone I would actually not mind... But the 11 pro Maxit is way heavier that s true.

I would not put too much of the decision on the ’zoom’/tele lens. Although we have not seen the quality of the 65mm lens/sensor yet the 52mm have been only slightly better than cropping the 26mm Historically.

The new larger sensor on the 26mm on the Max will be better for sure, but for most it will not matter.

Well it seems we/I have to wait for some comparisons.
Just wanted to start a new discussion, because the 11 pro Max could be an interesting alternative to the ne IP 12 non pro, since price is same 😊.

If there is almost no difference between the cameras (here ultrawide and wideangle), I think I will consider the 11 pro Max. But will have a look at it first (size and weight).

Any other ideas/thoughts are welcome

I’m coming from the 11PM. Great phone for Sure. After a few years with the weight and size of the Max I’m ready to go a little smaller and the 12 has all the features that previous gens lacked.

Also should note that there is not an additional 4x or 5x ‘zoom’ range. It is misleading by Apple. It just means the camera sensors/lens go from 13mm to 52mm (4x), 13mm to 65mm (4.5x) or 13mm to 26mm (2x). The 26mm sensor/lens is superior to the 13mm and 52mm/65mm. I like the 13mm/26mm combo because you can crop the 26mm to 52mm and get basically the same results. You can’t crop 26mm to 13mm and at 13mm the quality is less important (distortion is the biggest issue and Apple did an ok job With that).

I considered both but it boiled down to the slightly bigger size of the 12, the camera, faster processor, aluminium edges and I liked the blue colour the 12 comes in. Both decent phones though and very capable. You won’t go wrong with either.

Bigger size has the IP11 pro Max compared to basic IP12.
The rest I totally agree, faster processor (though probably irrelevant compared to A13), color options.
On the 11 pro Max you get SS frame, larger display.

Yeah sorry I was thinking about the 11 Pro when I wrote that. Everything else I stated was an advantage for me.

I would go for the 11 pro max if you don’t care about 5g. Currently an 11 owner and I honestly wouldn’t mind the pro max myself
But I can’t find a good sale in the UK yet. Maybe in a few weeks.

So the first reviews are out there. What do you think now about IP 12 non-pro vs IP 11 pro Max?
Regarding camera features, nightmode is definately better on the 12 series, but overall the camera in IP12 is not a huge step forward but rather a small improvement. Comparing the fotos between IP12 and IP11 pro max I would have expected a clear winner. Battery life seems to be worse than on IP 12 series but this might be due to 5G support - which is not really relevant now. In germany we even do not have full LTE coverage...
Battery life on 11 pro max seems to be insane and you get a bigger display versus fresh design, 5G and small camera improvements on the IP12 side.
Again, to me, it is a very tough call...

If you are fine with the 11 Pro Max size and weight then rather go for that.

The 11 Pro Max battery life is just incredible, I never worry about needing to charge mine, I only bother to do so when I go to bed or if I forget I just fast charge it the next morning.

I was set on upgrading to the 12 Pro this year, but after all the disappointing leaks I ended up opting for an 11 Pro Max. (Found a decent deal on a used one)

It seems like the biggest selling point on the 12 was 5G which I don't think is a big deal right now since it's stil developing and I can only see it draining the battery, which I value more. Otherwise small improvements in the Camera and I guess the color blue if that matters to you?

The biggest draw for the 12s for me was that it started at 128GB vs 64GB on the 11s, but after factoring in the cost of upgrading to a 256GB 11 Pro max I was sold on just saving more $ on an already great phone.

But that's just me, Good Luck making up your mind though!

Yes, camera is important, but -as I said- I expected here a greater difference between IP 12 and IP 11 pro/max.
Blue is an option for me, yes, but my fav would be graphite/grey. It is just that the IP12 (I m just talking about the normal one, not the pro-Version) offers too lees compared to the IP 11 PM. And since price is the same, I strongly consider the IP 11 pro max rather than the standard IP 12.

The biggest advantage of the 12 is a very slightly improved image quality (and that’s if you’re pixel-peeping), and 5G. That’s it. Those advantages are tiny, and 5G is going to cost you battery life, so you’ll probably keep it turned off anyway.

If you really want a bigger screen though, that seems like a significant downside of the 12 vs the 11 Pro Max. That, and the far worse battery life.

Hi all,

finally, I decided to go for a 11 pro Max...and I have no doubts that this was the right decision. I found an offer for 849 EUR here in germany, almost pristine condition, no scratches at all and most important: Apple Care still available for 9 months. Silver with 64 GB (which is really enough for me, never had and needed more), battery capacity is still 100%.
For me that was actually a no brainer.

The device is a dream, especially battery life, perfect size for me. Too heavy? Definately a no! But I came from a XR, which is not a lightweight, too.

Best regards

Weight and battery life would be the deciding factors to me. I don't mind the weight, it actually makes me feel this device is very stout and sturdy. The battery life is phenomenal. 16 hours SOT is regular for me with extremely heavy usage.

5G just isn't a big deal to me, the speed differences minimal for what I do, and I'm not big on taking photos.

I'd get the 11 Pro Max.

Edit:
I missed the post above, congrats! It's a great device. You'll love it!

100% agree. Battery life is really awesome and here in germany, 5G is not important nowadays. We even dont have full LTE coverage yet...

Me as well, I'm in a rural area in Texas and some of our providers here don't even get any cell reception at all! So 5G is definitely the last thing on my mind. I think my 11 Pro Max will be with me for a few years, I truly feel this device was worth moving from my 7 Plus for.

Personally, I think it’s a game changer. Better battery life, better performance (A14) and WAY BETTER CONNECTIVITY. Even if your area doesn’t have 5G deployed yet, 3G/LTE speeds will be significantly faster. I got my iPhone 12 (Previous iPhone Xr) and speeds & coverage seem to be x3/x4 better. The change from the Intel modems to the Qualcomm can be noticed. Just my two cents.

The size difference between these devices would be the only deciding factor for me. Both are highly capable phones but I’d choose the 12 as it’s more pocketable. It’s been nice to downsize this year.

How do you get 16 hours of SOT? What's the Secret😂. I never got more then 11 hours on my 11PM.

I'm still on iOS 13.3 for one, for two I'm jailbroken but don't run a ton of tweaks, for three I've got a lot of settings optimized for battery life. I keep background refresh off, manual for emails, location off when I'm at home, reduce transparency, Siri is deactivated, I use a 4G signal (Not LTE) when I'm on Wi-Fi as I get a better signal, and I don't use auto brightness but keep it at the minimum necessary for comfort.

Congratulations and welcome!

Had my 11 Pro Max for 9 months now and it’s down to 97% battery health and I am still getting phenomenal battery life lol, I actually cannot tell the difference between when it was at 100% and now at 97%, still continues to be an absolute battery beast, so don’t even worry about battery health, just enjoy the device!
