The iPhone 12 had less battery life than the iPhone 11. So let’s put things in perspective and compare the iPhone 13 with the iPhone 11, using the tests done by the website OP is referring to.

In conclusion, the iPhone 13 battery life for web surfing, which is what the website tested, is not as impressive when compared to the iPhone 11. Plus, probably a significant portion of the improved battery life is due to improved software (iOS 15 vs 13). It would be interesting to see the same test repeated with iOS 15 on the iPhone 11.

You have to keep in mind that the 13 series has a significantly more efficient chip compared to the 11. Also, the Qualcomm modem is 5nm compared to the 7nm in the 12 series. That would improve power efficiency as well. Moreover, the 13 series has bigger batteries than the 11 series in each phone. I’m pretty sure the 13 series will end up having significantly improved screen time in most scenarios.

Also, while real-life data is still needed, I suspect that while ProMotion is sometimes presented as a battery drain its ability to drop down to as low as 10Hz refresh rate might make it a battery-life hero rather than villain for people who view a lot of static content - me as a big eBook reader being a case in point.

What would be interesting then is to compare, say, iPhone 12 with iPhone 13 both running the same iOS 15. This will be more useful than comparing an iPhone 12 running iOS 14 with iPhone 13 running iOS 15, since the new software brought in its own benefits.

Unless you game at 120 Hz most of the time on the 13 series, it should exhibit much better screen time than the 11 series.

Imagine how good battery life is going to be on Pro models with Low Power Mode, which should lock in a low frame rate. Will be off the charts. Look forward to testing.

Not necessarily, as Apple still sell iPhone 12, so they could compare both 12 and 13 brand new, running the same iOS version.
