Indian made goods attract lower taxes for buyers. iPhone 12 costs $250 less than iPhone 13 here. Hopefully 13's price will drop by March as well.

Her mother is an Indian, so that makes her an Indian American. I was just responding to hateful comments before my post. I am not sure why my disarming response is the one that irked you.
Your explanation about cost is concise and answers my question - thank you.
I'm not sure you read my post correctly, I'm not irked. I wanted to know what you were trying to get across with your statement. It's that simple. Cute that you deem your own comment as disarming though.
Perception is everything and I'd suggest that in the eyes of most people, the word 'Indian' doesn't even come to mind when describing Kamala. They may have heard differently of course but most people, in fact everybody makes an initial judgement when they see/hear something. That judgement may change when more evidence comes to light but that initial thought was still there.

Looking forward to ‘Pro’ iPhones being manufactured in India.

Huge difference in USD to INR for non Pro and Pro iPhones currently. For non Pro iPhones it is 1 USD = 100 INR and for Pro it is 120 INR. That’s 20% extra just for the ‘Pro’ iPhones.

Import duty causes the higher price but would be nice if the exchange rate is same for both Pro and non Pro iPhones.

Also would love to see the iPhones being manufactured from launch date itself instead of the current 6 months later after launch strategy.

Good news. Maybe iPhone 14 will be produced in India as well in the year 2022. Can’t wait to find out what the tracking of the iPhones will look like.

Would most likely be departing from Chennai/Bangalore or Mumbai. Considering Apple’s warehouse is currently in Mumbai and all domestic orders are shipped from here, it is possible for shipments bound out of the country to depart from Mumbai :)

I think we are getting a bit off topic here. But I assumed most Americans would know about the origins of their Vice President. Maybe she is not a prominent figure in US, as she is for Indians back home.

Regardless my point was that Indians getting these racial/stereotype hate should be a thing of the past now, considering their overall positive outlook in the US media. In fact these slurs should not be there for any community in a progressive society.

Probably.
One thing I have noticed is that with politics you can't take anything for granted. Most people should be up to speed given how public things have been recently but there are a lot of people that politically exist in an echo chamber.
Unfortunately I don't think racial slurs will ever be a thing of the past. Ever.

Good Move. There's a huge price difference in Imported iPhones vs Locally Made Ones. This really helps Apple sell a lot more.

Side Note: Looking at the comments here, seems like having Indian Tech CEOs and even a god darn US Veep hasn't helped us get acceptability in the mainstream.
Acceptability in the mainstream? In what areas or terms or light are you talking about?
Indian Tech CEO's ... wider acceptance of Bollywood movies/shows outside of Indian cultures is not helping get acceptability? That's big start thus far.

Doesn't matter where they are manufactured if the prices don't decrease - even the made in India phones sell at the same prices they used to when they were imported.
it DOES matter to Apple and to investors. The prices drop significantly when producing outside of Taiwan and China and especially with the latter LESS restrictions from CCCP gov' or even scrutiny, control or moreover in a business sense like the rest of Apple's supply chain ... less reliance on 1 location should ANYTHING limit or halt production.

It's about business ... not always making the end user save $$.

That would be so cool to see it depart from the well-populated city of Mumbai. My fingers are crossed and I’m really hoping this year Apple produces their product line in India.

The India market can only afford outdated SKUs in most cases.

Apple sells an iPhone for years. You can still buy an iPhone 11 from Apple.

As long as Apple has the device in production and for sale, the SKUs are not "outdated".

At the cost of fragmentation.

Not really. Nothing in the iPhone is actually made in China, it is just assembled in China. Apple can send the parts (which are manufactured in Taiwan, Japan, Korea, USA, etc) to India for assembly just as easy as sending them to China for assembly. There is no real fragmentation to speak of.

Sure, if that's your definition.

For most people, something being outdated just means it's not the latest and greatest. Fashion from the last season. If it's out, it's outdated.

This is obviously wrong, but I don't want to argue with you.

If you have any references to what components in the iPhone are actually manufactured in China (not counting Taiwan) I am interested. The Wall Street Journal had a teardown of the iPhone 11 and found that a few rubber gaskets where the only components actually manufactured in China. Everything else was made elsewhere and shipped to China for assembly.

I have been curious if more components are now being manufactured in China for the 12 and 13, but I haven't seen any new reports.

Edit: Oh I forgot the battery. That was/is manufactured in China.

How soon until global consumers can opt for an Indian-built iPhone rather than one made in China?
Well, it will be around Feb/March'22 for you. I am also waiting for the Made in India iPhone 13 as China and others gifted Covid-19 to the world. The world needs to come together and boycott China. The price in India has already started to drop for iPhone 13.

Anything that reduces Apple's reliance on China is great for the world.
Yes, I agree. A lot of US companies have blindly trusted the Chinese government for ages and now everyone has paid the price with Covid-19, which is a gift from China to the world. So, suddenly there's a change of heart and now suddenly everyone is looking towards India, which is a very good thing for the world and should have happened a long time ago.
