So I bought my dad a 13 pro max. He’s 75 yrs old and loves it. However the phone is always draining fast. Even when it’s sitting on the table the phone is warm abnormally and literally it’ll drop 15% in 1 hr and it’s dead in 4 hrs. It’s been pretty frustrating. He’s been to the Apple store twice now. They are not replacing the phone. They run diagnostic and it still not fix. I did a factory’s reset and still does the same draining issue. And the phone is always always hot! So anyway I’m pretty frustrated about this issue. Any tips on this whole thing? How can I get Apple to fix this thing! I even told him to not install Facebook messenger so that I can rule stuff out but still it doesn’t work as described and drain quick.

My SO 13 pro max and my 13 mini don’t act like this. When we don’t use the phone it’s cool to the touch.

Check your battery stats and find out what app is draining your battery? When you mention it's hot I'm gonna assume some apps are running 100% all times until your phone is completely out of juice.

I’ve done that. It’s like photos and really nothing. The phone is blank with no apps installed. I’ll take screen shots. I may have to borrow his phone to test it. It’s crazy the drain.

Does your Dad have anything paired with his iPhone such as through Bluetooth or an Apple Watch? Sometimes that can cause excess battery drain.

Take some screenshots and show the battery stats. Someone should be able to shed some light.

Between the coasts
The store should have looked for apps and other factors that drain power, but you never know, they may have just run a diagnostic that told them the battery is good. If the battery is good, they're not going to replace the phone.

Heat is a sign of work being done - the more work, the more heat. So the question is, what's causing the work to be done? The graphs in the Battery settings are a big help. If you toggle the Show Activity/Show Battery Usage option you'll see not only the percentage usage of each app, but the hours/minutes of usage. A high percentage of minimal usage doesn't tell you much more than what app is using the most power - the time spent in usage can give a more complete picture of how your dad is using the phone (example: 8 hours of social media).

One of the classic power drains (especially with older people) is to set Auto-Lock to Never and to have the brightness set to maximum (Settings > Display & Brightness). Also, check to see if Auto-Brightness has been disabled (Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size). If the display is constantly on at a high brightness there's going to be above-average heat and battery drain.

Ok folks update. After the 4th Apple store genius nerd appointment they finally changed the battery. Good thing my dad is retired lol he has all the time in the world to keep going there. I told him to keep making an appointment if they refuse to change the phone. So he just make a tech appointment almost every week so finally they changed the battery. The iPhone 13 max no longer heats up idling for a few hours on a table. And the battery actually last a long long time. He was actually regretting trading in his 11 that worked well for the 13 pro max after the issues with this phone. But glad it was resolved.
