Other iPhone 13 notch looks... worse somehow

I was never, ever bothered about the notch - from X to 12, I never got the big deal - it never really got in the way for me, I don't think it looked too bad, and actually it gives the iPhone an identity with all other phones looking exactly the same.

But there's something off for me about the iPhone 13 notch - weirdly, despite it being smaller I actually think it looks more distracting. It has really strong Pixel 3 XL vibes.... and I suppose my main gripe is - why did Apple bother doing it if it wasn't going to make any use of that extra screen space in the "ears"? An extra widget option, battery percentage, screen lock icon? Something. What was the point in making the change at all? I don't know, just a weird change and quite honestly fit the weird vibe that seemed to go through yesterday's event.

I guess it helps differentiate this year's model from the rest of the Face ID equipped iPhones.

I’ll have to see it in person, but I kind of agree. Especially if there is no extra icon in the increased with. Give us battery percent or headphone icons back..

The extra space just makes it look awkward, without providing any real benefit. I guess if you watch movies on your phone it might be slightly better.

I have a Pixel 3XL. I thought the same thing.

Trust me, having a tall notch is worse than having a wide notch especially if there are no extra status icons. Any apps that cut off the notch area to avoid clipping content will be a little bit smaller .

Totally agree with OP. I noticed something as well. The notch seems deeper (actually is deeper), that's where the Pixel 3XL vibes are coming in

Yep, I thought that, it now looks deeper and more jarring to the eye. Also thought Pixel 3 XL.

Yeah I own a Pixel 3XL and the resemblance did cross my mind. Honestly the 3XL notch became quickly invisible to me so I’m sure this will, too. Though I’m sure for some people it will be very annoying and even more intrusive. The notch must go. I’m hoping next year we can switch to the annoying dot. 😜

I know the notch is taller (by the smidgiest of smidges), but making the notch narrower actually makes it look taller as well. The height wasn’t an issue when the notch was spread out a bit more.

An illusion for sure, but the brain sees what it sees. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I agree, making the notch even slightly deeper even though it's more narrow does make it a little more intrusive. Not a deal breaker in itself, but also not a great improvement in that respect. This wouldn't stop me from upgrading if I still had an iPhone X or earlier.
