Hi. Finally got around to setting up the 13 Pro Max. And in the process of needing to have the phones side by side, it was clear the screen of the 13 was dimmer -- and therefore seemed duller -- than the 12. Same devices (Pro Max), same max brightness settings. True Tone same on both, etc.

Anyone else able to do a comparison? Wonder if I got a dud...
Ok I finally got why it’s not brighter, the issue is on apples part, same thing with the Apple Watch, the ambient light sensor while you can turn off auto-brightness,sadly it’s still technically operating, for instance, take a light, put it on the sensor, you will see the 1000 nits glow open. Apple should fix that. You can’t control your own brightness.

Me and my wife bought the 11 pro max 2 years ago. I upgraded the next year to the 12 pro max and my only complain was that hers 11 pro max screen was brighter than mine. I upgraded to the 13 pro max this year and before selling my 12 pro max. I tested side by side all 3 of them to see the brightness. My 13 pro max is noticeably brighter than my wife's 11 pro max. The 12 pro max comes last between the 3 of them in terms of brightness. As many have stated in the past iphone screens are a lottery ;)

I think not only the screens are a lottery, the ambient light sensors are all over the place too.
With AB & everything off, my 12P and 13P look very similar. As soon as AB + true tone is on they are completely different.

Has anyone had both the 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max at the same time and noticed the 13 Pro Max brighter than the 13 Pro? Followed everything in this thread and PM is still brighter. Thought the Pro screens were identical?

I had both when I was deciding between the two last year. The PM was indeed brighter and whiter than the smaller one. However, you have to keep in mind that there is a panel variance at play here. I had two other 13 PM's as well and all three had different screens to various degrees.

Thanks for the info! Which did you end up deciding on?

There’s another setting not mentioned yet, and maybe new, called “Reduce White Point”. It’s next to auto bright in Accessibility, text size. I was about to compare at the store or something, switched that off, and it made twice the difference of turning off auto bright or auto tone. Now I can squint a little less if I don’t have the right glasses on.
