So I’ve been experiencing an issue where my iPhone 13 Pro becomes so warm that it’s actually uncomfortable to hold.
I’ve had every iPhone since the 4s and have never felt heat like it coming from an iPhone.
I had tried a full back up and restore, restore as new device, gone through apps to see if any are draining or excessively using the battery and nothing stood out.
I tried iOS 16 and while it seems to have improved it still gets hot.
So I went to the Apple Store today (Milton Keynes) and they couldn’t have been less helpful. The colleague was more interested In going through all my apps and showing me how much battery they use and that this would be the issue rather than a phone fault. They ran diagnostics and while he said it was warm it was within normal temps. I was then told to change how I use my iPhone and to not use certain apps as they would cause more heat as they were more cpu intensive.
So I was annoyed when leaving as it was a 90 minute journey each way for them to basically hark back to the days of bumper gate and be told to use my iPhone differently.
I’ve never had to have a iPhone replaced or repaired and I’ve got AppleCare+, I even offered to pay the fee to get a refurb to see if this would help but he refused that too as the iPhone wasn’t physically damaged and all components show’d okay on their testing.
I’m at a loss with what to do, support have said there’s nothing more they can do if store have checked the device, does anyone have any advice?

There's nothing you can do because you haven't provided any objective measurement of the device temperature. There's a lot of text in this post but not a single point of data nor comparison to other units running the same software configuration.

I have a theory that the 5G cell modem being used in the 13 creates too much heat for its thermal management system. This manifests [for me] when outdoors (thus using 5G instead of WiFi) and the screen suddenly dims so low you can barely read it.

(Note I'm on T-Mobile, so 2.5GHz 5G is available pretty much everywhere here)

How can I provide a measurement of the device temperature? I stated it now gets uncomfortably hot which it never has before and I’ve not changed anything. I explained what troubleshooting I’d tried to see if anyone had any other suggestion. I’ve got an iPhone 13 Pro and an iPad Air 2020 so can’t really compare devices unfortunately.

I’m with EE in the UK and get fairly consistent 5G where I am, I’ve had this since not long after the device launched so not sure this would be the issue unfortunately, but thank you!

I've had better support via 1-800-APL-CARE, including initiating a device replacement for AppleCare+.

It's summer in the USA... how warm has it been where you're at?

I know you don't want to lose your data but have you tried setting up as a new phone? Like, just use it without a back up as a clean slate?

I’m in the UK, while it did get up to 39c a few weeks ago, where I am now it’s in the early to mid 20’s so not hit by any means.
I did try this around a month ago, however apple said they couldn’t see any record of this when they checked.

That’s always the best option. Wipe it clean and see how it runs.

You will be surprised to learn that—in quite nearly every single case—the issue is not the phone. It’s the junk you put on it and how you use it that causes perceived/actual issues.

You've given us nearly no actionable insight. What are you doing on the device when this happens?

My device gets extremely warm when I am FaceTiming, sharing screen, and charging at the same time. But nothing about this is surprising, or flawed to me.

hardly the best option. iOS doesn't allow a ton of crap to run in the background.

OP will likely wipe their phone, set it up again, and go back to their same workflow as before, and still have a hot phone.

I agree that "It's ... how you use it that causes perceived/actual issues." I disagree with "It's the junk you put on it"

There’s been a common problem with the MacRumors website causing this issue, which I’ve experienced myself. Using Firefox Focus as my content blocker was the issue for me. Once I turned it off, I stopped having heat and battery issues. This may be your issue if you’re on the site a lot (even if you’re not using Firefox Focus).

Mainly either on here or using Facebook/Instagram or the Apple News app. While it does get warm charging I really use it while charging.

There is a known bug on this website that causes the iPhone processor to heat up.

i’ve seen problems with 5G too, i’m in Australia and my plan originally didn’t include 5G but it got updated automatically and i turned on 5G.
I kept wondering why my phone kept getting so hot and throttling, realised it was 5G being in use… disabled it and no issues again.
Also no mmwave here for iPhones yet

Deactivate Backround refresh. Phone works absolutely the same, but needs less power and thus generates less heat.
Also avoid sunlight. These non reflective screen suck in warmth so much.

Not everyone is "super geeky" and gets down into the weeds of the numbers! LOL... he's is simply describing his symptoms, help diagnose...

If you’re using a fast charger and using your phone at the same time it’s going to get really warm. And add in FB/Insta which are resource intensive apps it’s gonna make it worse.
Sounds like there’s nothing wrong with your iPhone other than your usage habits unless it gets hot in other scenarios as well.

I’ve had this issue before with iPhone 7+, 8+, 11 Pro. A lot of it has gone away switching to Duck Duck Go as my browser. I don’t use social media apps anymore but those are heat generators in my past experience. I do use Apple News App and it does heat up my current iPhones. I use an iPhone 11 and SE 2022. I sometimes just have to reboot.

If a beam of sunlight falls on my 12 mini even through a tinted window it will start heating up too hot to hold.

I’m really hoping the 14 Pro has a vapor chamber cooling as this is a pain to deal with.

I did notice years ago that certain iOS upgrades triggered the problem where it didn’t exist before. This was especially noticeable in my iPhone 7 Plus. I originally intended to keep that phone 2 years but after an iOS update midway through owning it, it started doing random heat ups. I decided to trade it for an 8 Plus before the warranty ran out.
