Apple won't let you record a minute of ProRes 4K if you don't buy at least 256GB. Everyone knows Apple rakes in the money when you buy storage and RAM, but this is a bit ridiculous.

There's a * at the end of that statement.

ProRes video recording up to 4K at 30 fps (1080p at 30 fps for 128GB storage)*

which if you look at the bottom of the page you'll see

* Coming later this year.

Yes, Apple made it clear ProRes isn't available yet. But more importantly, most people don't expect storage to affect features:

"iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max support ProRes video recording in the Camera app at 1080p 30 fps with the 128GB storage option and up to 4K 30 fps with 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB storage options."

I think @PieTunes is correct and that the write speed of the 128G chip won't be fast enough for the amount of bandwidth required for 4K ProRes video.
Is there any other application on the iPhone that requires that rate of data write speed? Probably not.

iPhone 8 64GB can write at 200MB/s.
iPhone 12 128GB can write at 400MB/s.

Unless each minute of ProRes 4K video is >24GB, there is no chance it's related to write speed.

For reference, a minute of standard 4K video is 170MB.

I still don’t understand what ProRes or the RAW is on the Pro models. I want to switch to the Pro but I’m not really sure if I will utilize these or not? I like taking really nice videos of me and my friends on trips and making aftermovies, probably a few times a year and if the ProRes would make the quality or whatever better that would be cool.

When you buy the 1TB iPad Pro, you also get more RAM.

Maybe it’s about longevity? If you use a small flash memory a lot it’ll wear down faster than if you use a larger one the same amount.

this is ridiculous, but since i won't utilize this feature, i'm sticking to 128. I'm using less than 25GB on my phone currently.

The more SSD storage you have, then parallelism is faster due to more space, which equates to faster read/write speeds, so this makes sense somewhat. Apple must be loving this though, as they can upsell you to the 256 GB model more easier.

For people who do video editing sure. But how many people will really use this feature? I've taken all of 10 videos on my phone the past year, editing 0 of them. I'm not going to pay Apple an extra $200 Canadian for storage i dont need and a feature i won't use.
