Yeah... I really don't want to spend all that time logging into every app again. I'll wait as patiently as I can for the update.

Yep, even with the direct connect method, it took me about a day to find and re-login to a bunch of stuff. In addition to the normal logins that don’t come over (things like Authenticators), I have to deal with redownloading and authenticating to stuff involving my company’s MDM, reinstalling my own apps that I’ve written, stuff that I install via TestFlight, certain wallet things that don’t come across unless you do additional steps, etc. The idea of “wipe and restore” gives me shivers.

I understand , everyone has a different set-up and threshold what is worth it.
However with restore via encrypted backup on Mac (local) , in addition to backup from same hardware (not a device change) seemed to result in far fewer redownloading/authenticating stuff than from iCloud and especially with other hardware serial number (resulting in new authentications) .. ... this made me spend less time 2nd time around (iPhone 13 >> 13) compared toe first time (iPhone 11 >> 13).
For me it was worth the hassle.

About that: do you have any experience with an iCloud backup and restore to the same hardware without a device change? I have some quirks I would like to fix on my iPhone (other than the mask unlock not working) and that may be a good way to do it, but I really don't want to redo all app logins. Did you try that before?

I only tried an iCloud restore to a different device and that was such a disaster that I started over and did it via Mac.

FWIW, I believe iCloud Backup/Restore is much improved over years ago. I had poor experiences in iPhone 7 era? But More recent with iPhone 11 was better. Also, as I understand it, when you use Quick Setup (Device to Device), you are in fact using iCloud backup for some of the transfer. Previous to this year's issues Device to Device seemed the easiest way to get up and running on the new device. Having said that, my Mac-based encrypted backups have always been reliable, but I've don't have experience comparing the two for the 'same' backup.

My impression is that device-to-device required less re-logins on other apps (like Mychart, Spark, Things, Eve, Apollo, and Sonos to name a few, but not Nest, Wyze, and some others). I wonder whether the "login state" is copied over form the old device.

I only do Mac backups myself , because of the speed and security benefits .. not too much experience with iCloud restore , except for family past years (no issues)

What worked for me: Connected iPhone 13 Pro Max to MacBook. In Finder, did a full restore. Then restored on iPhone from iCloud backup. Then the mask unlocking switch worked on the iPhone. Green. Didn’t touch the AW5. All good. Had to spend a few hours resetting all the secure apps to work with the new Face ID. And re do wallet credit cards. Otherwise fine.

Not worth a few hours. Fix coming from apple tomorrow, barring any last minute problems.

I'm not sure about this, but it appears an update for iPhone 13 series is imminent. This morning I discovered iOS 15.0 19A346 ipsw file is no longer signed, so you can't re-install it.

https://ipsw.me/iPhone14,2 < all the iOS 15.0 for iPhone 13 series phones is revoked, but iPhone 12, for example, is still ok.

Also, there are reports on reddit of an update appearing last night that would not install.

Shambles that it’s not been fixed in a week for none beta testers. No doubt they are too busy fixing all the other issues related to the iOS 15 release recently reported. Very poor Apple considering how long the beta testing window was. Shame on you

Fixed for me. A little surprised by the 600MB file size for relatively minor updates.
