I’m debating whether or not to update my phone or just get a new battery. This phone seems to suit me just fine, although I’m not sure what specs/options the new phone might have.
What are you all doing/recommend to do?

It depends how much fun you have with a new phone and how important it is for you having a few Bucks More or less on your Account.
But if you Go for a „new“ one Go for a used 15 Pro or a new 16 / 16Pro, nothing below! Otherwise you will miss some AI Features in ios18.

I currently have a 13 and will soon need a separate phone for work, so I'm keeping the 13 and will get a 16 as well. Hoping to get another 2-3 years from the 13.

If your 13 works and is paid for, I'd just keep it and replace the battery. In my opinion, 4 years is the new 2 year upgrade cycle. Doesn't make financial sense to upgrade a phone that functions, meets your needs, and is paid for.

As @caiss mentioned, the new AI features are only compatible with 15 and beyond, so if you must buy a new phone, keep that in mind.

New battery. I have an iPhone 13 and my girlfriend has an iPhone 15. Other than Dynamic Island, there is no discernible difference between the phones. I don’t plan on updating until at least the 18.

Getting a new OEM battery should be the rational decision. I have paid for Apple battery replacements for an iPhone SE1, 6S and 8 within the last 2 years.

My 13 will be getting its battery replaced in Jan 2025.

The only reason(s) you would want to get a newer model would be better photography, better videography, better performance in games or video editing, or Apple Intelligence [only available in iPhone 15 Pro series and newer]

Also, iOS 18 is completely designed with iPhone 16 series in mind, although you can still run it on iPhone XR, iPhone XS up to iPhone 15 series...

iOS 16 and iPhone 14 series are the perfect combination, same with other versions released the same year as their iPhone counterpart...

Do I miss 2x zoom after switching to iPhone 13 Pro coming from iPhone 14 Pro Max? Yes... And even though I miss the longer battery life, to me, the non-Max/Plus models are the perfect size...

I'm in the same kinda situation as you. Have a 13 pro that I'm happy with it but the battery time isn't as good as when I got the phone.

I can se reasons why it isn't, it's down to 85% capacity, that's one reason and can be fixed with a battery swap (done by Apple) but the other reason is that the 5G network is now a lot more widely available. That wasn't the case when I got the phone and I am using 5G a lot more these days than I used to.
The 5G usage is only going to increase so that's my reason for getting the new iPhone 16 (or maybe 16pro). The newer modem in the 15 and upcoming 16 will be much more efficient in terms of power consumption and speed.

Another reason for me is that I can leave my phone to Apple as I have data that can't be backed up and need to be transferred to a new device. (Device 2 device)

But the 13 pro is a great phone. It runs great on iOS 17.5.1. When I get the iPhone 16 I will the battery swapped and then sell it or give to a family member. I'd say it will at least reach iOS 20 and prob beyond that.

I would just get the new 16 in September, but I take a lot of pictures and appreciate the camera upgrades. But you have to consider your own needs.

Apple provides a nice comparison page:
