Sometimes I can see that the always on screen turns off. Especially in the dark.

Ive read the Apple doc that says when it does.

Has anyone else noticed this as well.

Thanks

I was browsing the forums casually now and saw this thread and thought "oh weird, that never happens to me". I literally turned my head to look at my phone on my desk and the AOD was off.

So, apparently yeah! Weird.

I have this issue too with my 14 PM.
It stays on for about 30 seconds before the screen turns black.

I have no battery save or focus mode enabled. Restarting the phone does not help.

It's much worse with 16.2. It's false advertising. Maybe it could be called extended-on display? Certainly not always, and pretty much useless at this point.

It’s actually even funnier. It called an Always On Display (AOD). In settings you can disable it. But their is no setting to actually make it ALWAYS ON…🤣…only Apple could name something an Always On Display that can be turned off but can’t actually be set so that it’s always on!

I provided feedback on the Apple Feedback page. AOD should be exactly what it says. “Always On Display”

Toggle low power mode on and off. That should fix the issue and keep the AOD on without any issues.

Unfortunately that does not resolve the issue for me. During the day I have never seen the AOD shut off but it consistently goes black/shuts off at night. Makes it useless for a nightstand clock.

Do you use a Sleep Focus, or have you set an alarm or sleep schedule? Do you set the phone into low power mode for the night? These are likely causes for the display turning off per Apple's documentation:

It's also possible that the phone has simply learned that you don't use it much / at all during the night, and the display turns off because of that (also mentioned on the above page).

No to all the questions. Your last sentence is the problem and their is apparently no way currently to prevent that from happening according to Apple support. So as I have said in several places, Apples “Always On Display” is really a sometimes on display that you can set to never stay on but can’t set to actually always be on…🤣

So happy I found this thread! This AOD behaviour has been driving me nuts! Sometimes it shuts off when I'm on the couch and the phone is next to me while I'm watching TV. There seems to be no pattern from what I can tell.
Always on means ALWAYS ON. I don't want apple to "learn" anything about my habits. I want the display to stay on 24/7 if that's what I tell it to do. Does Apple really want another class action for concealing code? Batterygate not enough? Come on Tim Apple!

It's a great feature and one that I've been waiting for since Tim Apple became CEO. :) The devil is in the details though and the whole point is that the display, you know, STAYS ON.

LOL…yeah I didn’t mean that the Always On Display was the dumbest thing ever. I meant that the fact that it’s an Always On Display that you can’t make stay always on is the dumbest thing ever. I actually think it’s a great feature but you need to have a way to keep it ALWAYS ON…😁

Should be renamed to Mostly On Display (MOD). iPhone 15 will have the most energy efficient display ever : the Mostly On Display 😂

Brilliant! I'm actually surprised Apple didn't market an MOD for the 14 and then give us a true, just-invented-by-Apple AOD for the 15. If Schiller was still head of marketing, you KNOW that's what they would have done. :)

I’ve had iPhone 14 Pro since release date but have only noticed this issue since 16.2. Really hoping it’s a bug and not the new normal.

i noticed that the sensor for light/dimming will turn the AOD off if there isnt enough light.
Not sure if this is normal but it happens every night/when it is dark.
Could this be setting within ios ? to reduce battery uage.

in the dark, it is supposed to.
What time of the day?

Now that you mention it, it does always tend to turn off in low lighting but it is inconsistent. Some nights it will stay on all night, other times it turns off under virtually identical conditions. This is batterygate 2022. They need to be completely transparent with what precise conditions trigger the AOD to turn off. Otherwise, it's the same crapola all over again.

And they need to add a setting to allow you to keep the AOD ALWAYS ON! Their is already a setting to keep it always off. Their are folks out there, like me, who keep their phones on a wireless charging stand next to their bed at night who would like to use the AOD as a nightstand clock. It currently does not work in that use case because the AOD turns off during the night.

100%! I would like to do the same. They can add a setting something like "smart ON" which would function as it is now and "always ON" would be ALWAYS ON. It would be similar to the "5G Auto" and "5G On" cellular settings.
