I’ve only had my phone for 2 weeks exactly and I already found a chip on the outer camera glass edge. Doesn’t affect the camera function or quality but the chip is there. I’ve never dropped it or banged it around; always been in a case since day 1.

I went to Best Buy and they can’t exchange it. They referred me to apple. Luckily I have an Apple Store nearby. I’ve made an appointment for Monday but would something like this be covered for repair or replacement even if I didn’t purchase apple care?

I remember back in the day apple would give you a replacement if any product was defective or something was wrong for the first year. Any input would be appreciated.

Even with AppleCare I think they would consider that cosmetic damage, but let us know how it goes. I think it just depends on the person you talk to at the Apple store because I’ve heard different experiences from different people when it comes to minor stuff like this.

Wow. I was shocked at how far they stick out, even with how thick it is compared to the 13PM. What did they fill that space with? A SIM module spacer? Hmm...

They do protrude quite a ways out. Maybe the cases out right now don’t protect the cameras as well as I thought.

Never had any damage to my last phone (11 pro) but then again a lot has changed design wise since. That was the least of my worries but now I might have to get a camera protector if I can’t get the issue resolve at apple.

I can see them not willing to do anything, yet. Hope you have Apple Care. When you show up, unless you have already, dress up, suit/tie, etc. Be direct, be calm, state how it happened, state your concerns, state what you want as a resolution. Ask them either way, what they recommend for camera lens protection. You can voice concerns that the chip could lead to a crack developing that would require replacement. (It is possible that a chip could start a crack as the glass/crystal releases the stresses created in the incident)

Just tips that worked for me. I was handed off to their 'business support' person who immediately shuffled me to a quiet area and I got one-on-one service and walked out with a new replacement iPhone. (I was having the 'bendgate' symptoms, and wasn't obviously able to demonstrate it, but they replaced it quickly and I was out) I was grateful for the quick resolution and the replacement which was flawless for the duration.

It helps to 'play business'. (I was running a business at the time and was dressed the part for a meeting in the area when I went to the Apple Store. However I feel dressing up paid off) Good luck.

Thinking of a case that would protect those protruding lenses, maybe a 'LifeProof'? But, not to be too crude, the looks of the maximum protection case from them looks like trying to have sex in a full wet suit. It looked horribly clunky, cumbersome, heavy, constricting. But that type of injury would also likely happen with any of the iPhones too. *shrug* Cases can be a huge negative in the owner experience.

Very good advice. Thank you.

I will see today what’s happens. I went to another best buy and they said I was 1 day over even though it was the 14th day from my purchase. They consider it the 15th day which I don’t understand; the day of purchase is day 1.

I will try my luck later today. I will update my situation.

Well if you said you didnt drop it or bang it. It could be possible that it may have come like that out of the box but might be hard to prove that.

So an update. The genius took a look at my camera chip and came to the conclusion that the lens wasn’t chipped, but rather the outer ring; it’s considered cosmetic damage. The genius said there is no threat in the actual lens shattering or cracking. I could continue to use it as per usual.

The genius encouraged me to purchase apple care and investing in one of those camera lens protectors from Amazon.

The genius continued to explain that a repair wouldn’t be necessary but a replacement would be warranted in case the camera lens did crack or shatter past the chip but only if I had apple care. Without apple care I would have to pay out of pocket for another phone.

Here’s an even closer look at the chip and it does look like there’s another ring inside the outer most ring. They don’t call them geniuses for nothing.

I’ve always had my phones in cases since day 1 and never had any physical damages to any phones I’ve ever owned.

So now I’m thinking if the genius is right for me to invest in a camera lens protector or purchasing apple care, which I still have 46 days left to buy.

I have a better chance in bending a spoon mentally than trying to prove that to a genius. I will live with it and see what happens.

I've always bought Apple Care because in their iMacs and Mac Pros, there aren't many parts that you can get from reliable sources. It's gotten better, but I still buy Apple Care. It's paid off well in some incidents. But I know people that almost religiously do not buy Apple Care, and still have no problems requiring it, but occasionally are burned badly. It's a gamble. How lucky are you...
