Has anyone had any problems setting up face id?

my husband’s iphone 14 pro arrived today. when setting up face id, nothing happened when he positioned his face within the frame. I tried it too and still didnt work. He has tried everything (hard reset, erased all data, etc) and even called apple support. Nothing worked.

we ordered this through at&t. and the esim on the new iphone is already activated :(

It took it a moment for me as well. I had to pull it further than I had to pull it away from my face and then slowly move it forward towards my face again before it started registering.

Did you try in a different background setting? More ambient light perhaps? Screen protector?
tried doing it in different places here at home, different angles, different lighting. Nothing worked. I would leave it pointed at my face for over 10mins and nothing. Eventually it says Face ID is not available at this, try again later.

Tried this too. Unfortunately, still didn’t wok.

Nope. No case, no screen protector.

i dont think its a hardware issue because taking photo with front cam works.
Scratch that, i just tried portrait mode and it keeps saying to move farther away even if my arm is stretched out. Ohgeez…

Yep, had the same problems at the Apple store. Where the 13PM was a breeze the 14PM was a pain. First my angle was to low then too high then too close. I noticed it had real issues focusing on me to do it correctly. Just loaded Beta 1 of 6.1 gonna redo FaceID and see if its better.

FaceID was harder to start setting up than it ever was before - it took a good 20 seconds before it accepted that my face was in the right place (it wanted me to hold the phone much lower than before).
HOWEVER, once it did see my face, I was able to do the entire setup with one rotation of my face, which is quicker than I've ever done it.

FaceID doesn’t use the camera. It uses IR flood sensors. The camera is just a convenient way to help you align with it.

Sounds like a hardware issue. Since stock at stores may be ok I would go in and get a swap.

Don’t return it just yet. I had the same issue too. But the trick is to have enough lighting , hold your camera further away and most importantly have it at a bit of an angle from your chin pointing more upwards. These factors did the trick for me. Set up was very quick after it caught on and have had 0 issues with faceid.

That sounds like definitely a hardware issue specifically the dod projector not functioning properly. They should replace it for you. Too bad!!

Thank you everyone.

Even the portrait effects (natural, studio contour, etc.) don’t work. Already booked an appointment with apple genius - earliest appointment available is Tuesday :(

Will also call at&t tomorrow too to ask what they can do to replace soonest since i ordered from them. Also will ask then to reactivate my husband’s 12pro so he has something to use this weekend.

I’m afraid it’s not something Apple would be able to repair. Unless they’re willing to swap the front facing camera and reprogram it. They’d just have to swap with a new one. Good luck!

For those having some trouble, the angle seemed to be the most sensitive variable for me. Once I learned to tip my head down, w.r.t. phone a bit more than I naturally wanted to do, it picked it up no problem every time.

Since iOS 16 my Face ID on my 13 Pro Max hasn’t worked…ugh! This sounds software related!

I was not able to configure Face ID until I found out I disabled a setting (changing code).
