Why is this not implemented like how Samsung does it? Just turn off the rest of the display and just show me notification badges, date and time in a dimmed view. That way the phone does not look distracting when on the desk. What use do I have for looking at my wallpaper in AOD?

On iPhone, it constantly looks like the screen is turned on which is irritating. It seems like Apple did not want to look like they were ripping off Samsung so they came up with this dimmed lockscreen view as their AOD.
Agree on every point.

It's so much that it's distracting and battery life is actually taking a hit.

Apple always do it with their own twist. I think apples version is good as you don’t need to unlock to see what notifications there are
Apple's version would be better if it gave you some form of customization ability. They don't, which is ridiculous. You should be able to, at a minimum, set the brightness.

Hmm it just occured to me. Always on display. OLED burn-in.
Burn-in is affected by both time on and by brightness. It is likely at high brightness and constant on. Much less likely at lower brightness levels. The Apple Watch has had AOD for several years now and I haven’t heard complaints of burn-in there.

It would be nice if there was some control of the always-on screen on the focus setup. The watch has a theater mode with its always-on screen, why not the phone? I would like to create a focus where the always-on screen is off.
I know that the screen can be off during the sleep focus so I’m sure you could setup a different focus and switch the AOD off during that.

Just use black wallpaper for the lockscreen, and you're good. ;)

IMO, Apple's AOD is a huge step above Samsung's AOD. I been using Samsung phones forever, and their AOD has become pretty stagnant. No redesign, no added features, no better customizations, the notification icons are randomly colored or black n white, damn near since AOD was implemented.

I pickup my 14 Pro Max today, and AOD is at the top of the list on my excitement scale. Hopefully Apple influences Samsung to step up their AOD as well.
The AOD and the lockscreen serve different purposes. The AOD is only supposed to give you the basics. If it does everything the lockscreen does, it leaves no purpose for the lockscreen to exist. It's literally a dimmed lockscreen.

I said it before and I'll say it again. I think a lot of people are underestimated how useful the AOD can be.
On the Apple Watch maybe. You can glance at the clock without raising your wrist. On a phone, well I don't want everyone to pick up on my personal wallpaper (albeit dimmed) because of AoD.

It's on on mine, did not yet disable it yet, but, seems like it will switch off by itself or by pressing the on/off button, I still haven't figured that one out.

Is it possible to have the AOD only show the time/date and widgets/info?
Or would it just involve setting a blank black wallpaper? 😅
You can do this in all of the Focus modes. Under settings, choose Options and turn on Dim Lock Screen.
