I moved to a 14 Pro from a 13 Pro today and one weird thing is that whenever I swipe up to go to the home screen after I’m on the lock screen, it requires Face ID. On my 13 Pro it didn’t require that. Any idea what setting I’m missing that would have changed this?

Are you using Always On Display? I noticed when I had that enabled I would see Face ID flash momentarily as it went to the Home Screen. I didn’t have to anything and it was extremely fast so I wasn’t bothered, I believe it’s for security. But anyway I disabled the setting, I really see no use for it, and it behaves just as my previous phone did.

Yep, Always On display but it uses it even with Always On disabled. On the 13 Pro/iOS 15 I could hit the side button to light up the screen, then swipe up without needing to unlock it at all.

What was the setting to disable it? I set auto-lock to never and it’s still wanting to use Face ID to unlock the phone every time I unlock it.

You can turn Face ID off for the Lock Screen under Face ID settings, but then you'd need to enter your passcode each time...so that's not it. Dumb question, but are you sure you were using Face ID (and a passcode) on your old phone?

Maybe try setting up Face ID again with a new scan. It should just unlock right away when waking the phone or pressing the side button, assuming you are looking at the phone. (Pay attention to the padlock symbol at the top of the screen.) Or perhaps you had 'Require Attention for Face ID' turned off on your old phone? That will make it so you don't have to be looking at your phone for Face ID to work, but is also less secure.

Ok I think I figured out what the difference is but strangely I can’t modify it on the 14 Pro. The option of “Require Passcode” which only gives the single “Immediately” option was toggled off/didn’t have a check mark on the 13 Pro. But on the 14 it’s checked and I can’t uncheck it. Any idea why that is?

Bumping. My phone is requiring an faceid/passcode unlock every time it locks, whether it be 5 seconds or 5 minutes. My previous phone, 13 Pro on ios15 never ever did this. Super annoying when I have the phone on my desk and swipe up to unlock it and it won’t because I haven’t picked it up to my face/typed in my passcode.

No idea why that "Immediately" setting would have been toggled off/unchecked on the previous phone. My only guess is that something got corrupted and shouldn't have been that way. I'm 99.9% certain that Face ID / Touch ID is required all the time when unlocking, and can't be changed.

Do you still have your 13 Pro? If so, can you confirm that it indeed wasn't requiring Face ID? Perhaps it was just so quick you didn't realize it already unlocked with your face. Pay attention to the top of the screen to see if there is a padlock that unlocks, or cover up the camera to see if you're able to swipe up without needing Face ID/passcode.

FWIW, Face ID is working on my 13 when it's laying in front of me or slightly off to the side on my desk.

Definitely was not requiring it...I'd often be in bed and the phone would be on my nightstand and I could reach over and just swipe up to get to the home screen. Before I wiped the phone to send back to Apple I verified that it wass not asking me to unlock it in any way, unless I had rebooted the phone. Why would they even bother having that "Immediately" page if you can never uncheck it or change it?

Hmm, very odd! For that 'Require Passcode' page, there are more options other than 'Immediately' if you turn off Face ID altogether or turn off using Face ID for unlock. I fiddled around with this and haven't had any luck in getting Immediately unchecked, while also using Face ID.

The closest thing I can get to your old/wanted behavior is to turn off using Face ID for unlock, go back to the previous page (or leave Settings), then go back into 'Face ID & Passcode' to select a longer time the list above. You won't be able to use Face ID to unlock your phone, but your phone can stay unlocked for up to 4 hours until you need to put your passcode in again.

But does it let you use faceID for anything this way? The way my old phone worked was that I could use faceID for App Store, Apple Pay, unlocking 1Password, banking apps, etc but never/rarely needed to use it or a passcode to unlock my phone (typically only after a reboot or maybe several hours). When I played with turning off faceID for unlock it stopped letting me use it for anything and was making me manually sign in to 1Password every time I used the extension.

Edit:
Tried your method again and I think this is basically the behavior I was looking for, thank you!!

This helped me a lot. I think it's still a little different. My old phone used to require faceID to unlock after four hours (not a passcode), but this solution is much better than having to unlock my phone every time I want to go to past the lock screen. Thanks!

I have a SE (3) and it has been asking me to enter my passcode rather than unlocking with fingerprint (but not every time). When I check the settings I only have “Immediately“. Should I have those other options?

If 'iPhone Unlock' is turned on, then 'Immediately' is the only option.

There are other things that can trigger a passcode to be required, which I suspect could be your issue. Some examples are (link):
  • The device has just been turned on or restarted.
  • The user hasn’t unlocked their device for more than 48 hours.
  • The user hasn’t used their passcode or password to unlock their device for 156 hours (six and a half days), and the user hasn’t used a biometric to unlock their device in 4 hours.
  • The user exited power off/Emergency SOS by pressing and holding either volume button and the Sleep/Wake button simultaneously for 2 seconds and then pressing Cancel.
  • There were five unsuccessful biometric match attempts.

I have the exact same problem. Even when I turn off passcode and Face ID and turn off Apple Pay, nothing in apple wallet- “require passcode immediately” is the only option, the others don’t even exist. They did on my iPhone 11, but gone now and apple can’t seem to help me fix it.

Can you clarify which setting you mean by “iPhone unlock”? I’m having this same problem and can’t figure it out.

It’s this one. Also, once you turn it off, you have to leave the screen and go back in to see the other options for the ‘Require Passcode’ setting.

I wonder if this is a bug- did everything aforementioned with no Apple Pay or anything and I still only have the “immediately” option. So weird because with my iPhone 11 I could have Apple Pay and still only need it every 4 hours.
