I tend to keep my phones for a long time. I am upgrading from an iPhone 8 to some form of 14, so it is going to be a huge change no matter what, but I am curious if you would expect the 14 Pro to get updates and new features longer than the 14 simply because it has a somewhat newer design and a faster chip. I honestly doubt I need any of the the added features (I don't use my phone heavily), but I am willing to spend the extra $ if it would last longer and/or for higher resale value on trade or sale should I decide to do that at some point.

Note that the 13 doesn't make sense for me because I can actually get a 14 for less money.

Future iOS updates should not vary between pro and non-pro.

Don’t see one lasting longer than the other if both are treated equally.

As far as resale value the pros will certainly bring better return when you go to sell as it’s a higher end phone.

If you have the budget go for the Pro models. I know you said you don’t use your phone a ton, but when you do you’ll enjoy some of the benefits of Pro. One caveat is that they are heavier but very well balanced in the hand.

Thanks. That is the way I am leaning because the additional $ probably won't mean very much over the life of the phone, however I was actually concerned about the added weight. Is it very noticeable? And would you consider the phone a reasonable size/weight to stick in the pocket of a pair of jeans? I tried looking at them at a store and they were tethered to a charging dock to prevent theft so I could not get a good sense of the weight difference.

The processors share enough similarities that I bet they’ll lose support together. Apple doesnt stop support based on year it was produced but based on the hardware architecture and the new software demands. So slight different between a15 and a16 won’t mean much. There was a hard border between 32 but vs 64 bit that ended support for the 32 bit. The there was the most recent cut of software support on 6s, and 7 at the same time. Imho of course we never know 100% since we don’t work at Apple, but I think you are safe to buy the 14. Imho however there aren’t that many differences between iPhone 13 and 14 and If I were you get the regular 13. The 14 is such a small incremental release.

No one knows the strategy of Apple when and what will be supported in next iOS. Maybe both will be dropped at same time. Maybe not but then it will be the pro which will be support longer.
If you keep you phone a long time also keep in mind that the pro will give you the better photos in all these years.

Both phones will be usable in 2030 so longevity won’t be an issue for you. Even a 6S or SE from 2015/2016 will be a viable phone until 2024 with app support for over 2 years after the last official update.

So maybe no reason to replace my wife's iPhone 7 yet?

No reason whatsoever unless she wants a newer and better phone as the 7 can do 99% of what newer phones can do. The 7 is now unsupported by Apple, along with the 6S and SE, however all apps are likely going to be supported until late 2024 as third parties tend to go back at least 2 iOS versions. Even your 8 is perfectly fine for another 3 years minimum. Just make sure you are updated to the latest firmware on your phones to ensure the apps are supported.

I wish I didn’t care about my phones 2 years ago because I wasted money on a 12 Mini when I have a perfect 8 still in my possession.

No security updates anymore for the 7, right? We were going to upgrade the 7 to a 14, but keep the 8, which can be upgdated to iOS 16.

The security updates are still going to arrive on the legacy phones such as SE, 6S and 7 however they’ll be on iOS 15. I am a heavy phone user and I got by on an SE this year for 6 months before going back to the 12 Mini and I got by just fine… that’s why I know a 7 is a perfectly viable phone in this day and age. I am now going to hold onto my 12 until after it is no longer supported. I just don’t feel like a new phone provides any real world benefits anymore.

If you want to ‘wear out’ or ‘age’ an iPhone as quickly as possible- just keep updating the OS. Apple will see to it that it eventually becomes unbearable to use a few years down the line by slowing it to a crawl.
‘Updating’ is a lie. The correct term for installing newer IOS software is ‘downgrade’.

No longer true. The SE, 6S and 7 are unsupported and run perfectly well in iOS 15.7.

Apple learned from all the complaints they got from overextending the lifespan of the 4, 4S, 5 and 5S.

iOS 11 was supposed to be the last version for iPhone 5s but because of how most people see it as a very buggy release, Apple was forced to release iOS 12 for it and continue to release security updates for it even when iOS 14 was released...

It would be the same like back when iPhone 5c and 5s were released... 5c has A6 while 5s has A7... iOS 10 as the last version for iPhone 5 and 5c as they are 32bit while iOS 12 for iPhone 5s as it is 64bit...

A16 may gain an extra year of support compared to A15 and it would most likely be due to the neural engine... Like how Apple is limiting some features to be available on A12 and newer even though A11 also has a neural engine...

Actually the weight on my 14 Pro Max is not an issue and I originally thought it might be before I got it. It’s so well balanced and I never give it a thought. Fits into my jeans with no problems.

I know what you mean by not being able to get a sense of the weight at the store. I ran into the same problem and finally just decided to purchase it and see for myself.
