Hey, my iPhone 14 Pro Max battery unexpectedly drained overnight from ~50% to absolutely 0. Screenshots attached. I slept around midnight and woke up around 10am as you can see in the screenshots and the phone was completely idle in between i.e. no app usage on-screen or in background whatsoever. However the battery drained like crazy. iOS version 16.1.1. Never happened before. What could be it?

Was it right after an update? It could've been doing some type of indexing if so. Usually battery life takes a hit right after an update. Right below the graph it might show you some apps that were running in the background.

One other thing that would do this is if your phone was searching for signal because it was in a bad spot. If it keeps doing this turn it on airplane mode. If that fixes the problem then it was a signal issue.

Wasn’t after the update and the signal was 100%
My next troubleshooting step would be scroll down where it shows activity by app and look for background usage. There was a bug where Facebook was doing this but that's been fixed or at least it has for me. It could be any app running in the background.

I put my phone on the charger at night but no way should it go from 50% to zero in one night. I don't even use 50% battery during the day.

last pic shows camera. Turned on by mistake. Happened to me too.

It shows the camera used 61% in the last 24 hours, doesn’t show that it was turned on by mistake.
Maybe it was not by mistake he turned the camera on and went to sleep. But then don’t wonder when you wake up with drained batteries.

Maybe he closed all the apps and went to sleep. Maybe we will have to wait and see what he says about it, because all these maybe’s don’t mean anything, maybe or maybe not? Maybe?

But the battery app tells camera was active.

…right, camera 61% over the last 24 hours. Was he asleep for 24 hours? Maybe, then again maybe not. Maybe he’ll let us know when he wakes up 😀
When your battery is 50% switch on camera and let battery drain to 0%. Then let us know what camera usage you had.

if its just one off time it could be due to some app which was on (may be camera as per your battery app stat!?) or may be some background sync

What a coincidence! I had the exact same incident yesterday. I left the phone with battery about ~70% and when I woke up 6 hours later I found out the phone is dead and needs charging.
When I checked out the battery usage it appears that the camera used 71% of the battery but what’s surprising is that it shows screen time of only 1 minute. So could that happen???

The same thing happened to me last week, but the battery app showed siri was the culprit. But I never use siri and it was not active. There is something definitely wrong going on here…😀🤬

The camera wasn’t on overnight, definitely not intentionally and really doubt unintentionally. I have also added battery screenshot with the time interval selected just before I went to bed and it shows only 1m camera usage on screen (and nothing in bg). And it’s dead silence on the battery screenshot immediately after midnight as you can see. So I am almost 100% certain the camera wasn’t on.

Yes exactly!

Yup yup. 61% last 24h, not while asleep.

You only need to swipe the homescreen And the camera is turned on. What else can drain the battery that fast? And the battery app showed it was the cam. For me it’s clear what it was. As wrote above happened to me too. Woke up looked at my phone saw cam was active. Battery was drained to 15% within a few hours.

Yes I get it where you’re coming from however had it been camera shouldn’t it appear in app usage in the battery settings?

Attaching last 10 day’s battery usage screenshot. Notice the total screen on time and background time on camera app. Barely used!!! Similarly another screenshot attached from that day, notice no app usage shown in the other screenshot however battery drained very rapidly.

So it’s either the camera opened and iOS didn’t capture it in stats, which I really really doubt, or something else happened here and snapped the battery.

Really only you know - simple question, that 24hr graph shows 2hrs 58min of SOT usage…. How much of that ~3hrs were you using the camera for it show 61% of the battery consumption in that 24hr period?

That graph is consistent with the camera on and killing the batt overnight, 50>0 being ~60% of the 80>0 batt decline AND being a very flat/linear line below 50%. My guess is that it’s just another stupid iOS16 glitch that activates your camera without turning the screen on. Have done the 3button restart/reboot?

I had a similar issue today, left the phone at 60% when I went to sleep and few hours later I woke up and phone was totally dead. But mine doesn’t show anything about what used the battery. I wonder what is the problem with that.

So a few updates ago there was a problem with cloud sync which was draining the battery fast! They have since fixed it with updates so update to iOS 16.3.1 and you should find it’s fixed 👍
