iPhone 14 Pro taken by pickpocket in Amsterdam. Reported to the police and was told that recovery was extremely unlikely at best. Already locked and wiped the phone remotely.

Had AppleCare+ with theft protection.

Will Apple ship replacement to Amsterdam hotel? Or can it only be shipped to the address on file in the US?

Follow the process to start the claim and see what it says. And I hope you marked it as lost as it needs to be in lost mode through the entire claim process.

Wasn't there somebody recently who made a thread about making a claim for a lost/damage iphone but Apple's insurers refused the claim because the iphone was not in 'lost mode' as per the terms and conditions of claiming. Therefore putting it in 'lost mode' is extremely important to make a successful claim.

I think wiping the device is equal to lost mode as it will lock the device just the same. It's mandatory not to remove it from the account, which wiping won't do, it remains in the account and can't be activated until that account's password has been entered and 2FA confirmed.

Perhaps the reason it needs to be locked is that it rules out the possibillity of a fraudulent claim where location services and Find My is turned off and the device wasn't lost. I do wonder what Apple does if you get the device back at a later point in time after the claim has already been processed. Do you then have to return one of the devices?

Yeah, theres also some additional fine print too in the footer on this page that looks like you need to follow which I'm hoping the OP is following. It seems like OP erased the phone before starting the process which I'm not sure will affect it or not?

  1. Theft and loss coverage requires you to have Find My enabled on your device at the time it is lost or stolen. Find My should remain enabled and your iPhone should remain associated with your Apple ID throughout the theft or loss claim process. During the theft or loss claims process, you will be asked to erase your missing device, disable it, and transfer ownership before you can be issued a new device.

To ensure that you can sign in and access Find My, it’s important to remember your Apple ID and password and keep your account information up to date. If you use two-factor authentication for Apple ID, it’s recommended that you add an additional trusted phone number to your account so that you can receive the six-digit verification code required to sign in even if your iPhone is missing.

After initiating your theft or loss claim with Apple, you will be asked to finalize your claim on AIG’s website at www.aigtheftandloss.com.

If 'Find My' is enabled and activated, wouldn't doing just that part by itself lock out the iphone? because anyone finding it would only be able to access it if they enter in the registered Apple ID associated with the iphone.?

Thus the insurer would be able to check if 'Find my' was enabled (using Apple support) and once confirmed the insurance process could proceed to the next step of asking the owner to then go ahead and erase the device and disable it but who would they transfer ownership too? the insurance company? because it says transfer of ownership must be completed BEFORE a new device is issued.

update:

it wasn't my own phone... a family member is travelling in Amsterdam with friends.

she didn't have her Apple ID password with her and also didn't have access to a computer. She called me from the hotel and I finally retrieved the password from her computer at home. she then used the guest-use computer in the hotel lobby to lock/wipe the phone. The hotel clerk helped her make a police report.(because her wallet, passport and some small amounts of cash were also taken by the pickpocket who cut her purse open)

not sure what's going on right now, since she hasn't called me back with updates yet.

Cutting your purse open? That is very low. :(. Ugh Sorry this happened.

Really? Never heard of it (I live in Europe).

Crime: While the rate of violent crime in the Netherlands is low, tourists are often targeted by pickpockets, bag snatchers, and other petty thieves and are active in and around train, tram, and metro stations in the city center; and aboard public transportation, especially to and from Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport. Thieves often work in pairs: one distracts you, often by asking for directions, while the other moves in on your unguarded property.

I take over being killed. Even though I don't care.

Tourists should be aware of pickpockets everywhere in the world, I guess, especially in typical tourist places. However, I wouldn’t say it is „pretty common“, which at least to me sounds like „more common than elsewhere“.

(And Amsterdam is not equal to Europe.)

she does have a CCP, but usually open carries her VP9SK to deter people with bad intentions..... (of course, that only works in her state... not when travelling in Europe) :)

Theft & Loss is only in certain countries, not including Netherlands. So likely her replacement would be shipped to an address in her home country (USA). Someone there could then ship it on to her, if she’s going to be staying for long enough.

Apple sure works fast. A replacement phone is already on the way. Apple shipped it out via FedEx overnight. It's scheduled for delivery sometime today. (but to our home address in the US) Strangely, the FedEx tracking page doesn't show signature required.(!!!) Guess I'll have to make sure my doorbell camera is recording.

I'll not ship it to her to the Netherlands. Seems like too many things can go wrong that way. She bought a cheap smartphone at a local shop for less than $150 and will be using it for the remainder of the trip. She does still have her iPad Mini with Google Fi SIM card, so it can still be used as a phone if necessary. :)
